Notes: Abstract As a contribution to the debate on CAPM reference models derived from control theory concepts, we formulate the basic computer-aided production management problem from a control theoretic point of view and examine the main difficulties in using this crude framework as a basis for decision-making. Next, different hierarchical approaches are shown to be potentially of value in overcoming the two main difficulties highlighted by the control theoretic paradigm, i.e. dimensionality and the discrete event nature of manufacturing systems. In this context, we examine the literature concerned with both multilevel control as well as multilayer control where the notion of aggregation plays a key role. Next, a mixture of multilevel and multilayer control is used to provide a framework for production planning and scheduling for multiline batch manufacture with application to detergents plants. This framework would appear to be of values also in discrete parts manufacture and this is also highlighted.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a decision support system for strategic planning in marketing channels. A dynamic model of the marketing channel is employed which comprises manufacturer and retailer levels. Decision making is achieved through a game theoretical inference mechanism in which each player (manufacturer/retailer) optimises for a long-term profit maximisation objective. Both historical data and managerial expertise are used for the parameterisation of the system's knowledge base. The decision support system provides a forecast of profit and sales and computes pricing and shelf space allocation strategies that maximise long-term profit. It offers facilities such as the study of coalitions, long-term decision-making in all phases of a product's life cycle, the impact of pricing, allocation strategies, production expansion, cost regulation, and others. The operationality of the system is illustrated in decision-making situations in the tile industry.

Notes: When the total reactant diffusivities are equal, the time-average concentration fields which result from turbulently mixing reactants can be measured thermally if the temperature difference between the feed streams is suitably chosen. Each reactant profile is obtained from measurements of the temperature profile in an experiment in which the inlet temperature of that reactant is less than that of the other reactant by an amount equal to the adiabatic reaction temperature change of the measured reactant. The method is demonstrated in a liquid phase confined jet reactor.
