    Notes: Abstract  Field studies of gas exchange of Populus deltoides, Prosopis juliflora and Acacia auriculiformis showed large diurnal changes in net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) during autumn. P. deltoides and P. juliflora undergo pronounced midday depression in A and gs while A. auriculiformis showed a one-peak response. Several factors indicative of photosynthetic performance were found to be reversibly affected during afternoon decline. These include (i) decrease in initial slope of the CO2 response curve (carboxylation efficiency), (ii) substantial increase in CO2 compensation point and (iii) decrease in overall quantum yield of photosystem II. The phenomenon can be duplicated in potted plants by simulating a typical daily pattern of PPFD and VPD. It is found that high VPD induces significant decline in A and gs at moderate temperature and saturating PPFD (800 μmol m–2 s–1) whereas these parameters are only marginally affected at high PPFD and low VPD. Fluorescence data show that the tree species under study have a high capacity for safe dissipation of excessive excitation energy. The activation of photorespiration, as evident from an increase in CO2 compensation point, maintains constant internal CO2 concentration (Ci) which may aid in minimizing photoinhibition during stomatal closure at midday. In case of P. deltoides and P. juliflora the stomata seem to be quite sensitive to the changes in humidity whereas this does not appear to be essential in case of A. auriculiformis because of its phyllode structure that endows it with mechanisms for conserving water without undergoing large-scale stomatal changes.

    Notes: β-D-Glucosidase, β-D-glucosaminidase, acid phosphatase, and β-D-galactosidase were monitored in the human foetal brain at different gestaional periods. Glucosidase specific activity in all brain regions exhibits two peaks, at 8 g and 32 g foetal weights. Acid phosphatase exhibits very high specific activity in all brain regions at 5 g, but the cerebellar activity forms a peak at 220 g foetal weight, the midbrain at 135 g, and the spinal activity at 760 g. β-D-Glucosaminidase has a peak at 220 g and 660 g in the midbrain, and β-D-galactosidase specific activity is highest in the cortex and cerebellum in late gestation (neuronal differentiation phase). The midbrain medulla and the spinal cord show peak activity at 8 g and 220 g foetal weight. The results suggest an inter- and intraregional heterogeneity of acquisition for these enzymes in human brain ontogeny.

    Notes: Abstract: In human foetal brain ontogeny the cerebral activity of succinate oxidoreductase (EC 1.3.99.1), i.e. succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), is higher than the cerebellar activity. With rise in foetal body weight the activity in all the brain regions gradually declines. SDH in all the brain regions shows two high-activity periods, one at 20–35 g and another at 110–220 g body weight. The enzyme exhibits a craniocaudal pattern of development. At all times of gestation, l-glutamate:ammonia ligase (EC 6.3.1.2), i.e. glutamine synthetase, activity in the spinal cord and medulla is higher than in the other three regions. At 190 g body weight glutamine synthetase shows an activity peak in all brain regions. Monoamine:oxygen oxidoreductase (EC 1.4.3.4), i.e. monoamine oxidase (MAO), is present much before the onset of electrical activity. It develops caudocranially and exhibits a biphasic pattern of development in all the regions. It increases considerably in the medulla and the spinal cord towards late gestational periods.

    Notes: High-quality chemical vapor deposited TiCN films were produced in a single wafer reactor using a metallorganic (TDMAT) precursor. The films have excellent step coverage over high aspect-ratio contacts as well as very low particle content. These properties are obtained because the films are deposited under surface-reaction controlled conditions. The films show also excellent barrier properties against Al and WF6 attack. These properties make this material a superb contact barrier material for ultra-large-scale integrated devices. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract— The time course of incorporation of intraperitoneally injected [3H]lysine and [14C]phenylalanine into neuronal and neuropil proteins has been followed for up to 8 days. At short times after injection (〈2 h) the specific activity of the neuronal fraction was higher than that of the neuropil. At longer time intervals, although the total brain specific activity continued to rise, neuronal perikaryal specific activity fell below that of neuropil. Thus the neuronal/neuropil incorporation ratio with [3H]lysine as substrate was 1·5 at 1 h, but by 4 h had fallen to 0·4, a ratio which was maintained for up to 8 days. A similar reversal occurred with phenylalanine as substrate. These changes were interpreted as evidence for the presence of a rapidly-labelling protein fraction in the neurons which is subsequently transported out. Subcellular fractionation showed that over the 4 h period the rapidly labelling fraction was not transported to the synaptosomes. Incubation of prelabelled cortex slices followed by cell fractionation showed that a differential transport of protein of higher than average specific activity from both neurons and neuropil fractions occurred; there is a tendency for preformed highly labelled protein to accumulate during the in vitro incubation in Fraction D, a pellet enriched in red cells, some large neuronal perikarya and cell nuclei. When cell fractions were prepared after in vitro incubation, the distribution of the material down the gradient differed from that when fresh tissue was fractionated, as demonstrated by microscopic examination and the distribution of β-galactosidase, a neuronal marker. Double-label experiments showed that this redistribution could not account for the preferential loss and accumulation of prelabelled protein. It was noted that in vivo incorporation into the rapidly labelling neuronal protein is suppressed under certain changed environmental conditions, such as dark rearing. This is interpreted as lending support to the concept of the state-dependence of neuronal and neuropil protein synthesis and their inter-relations.

    Notes: —The rate of incorporation of [3H]lysine into acid-insoluble material in vivo was determined in neurons and neuropil from the visual cortex of dark-reared rats, littermates exposed to the light for varying lengths of time and normally reared controls. Following onset of light exposure, the elevation of incorporation was confined to the neuronal fraction. On continuous exposure for up to 96 h, the level of incorporation in the neuronal fraction dropped to that of the dark control value. In dark-reared animals, the rate of incorporation in the neuronal fraction was 68 per cent of that in neuropil, in normals it was 150 per cent. On onset of exposure, the ratio in light exposed animals approached the normal level, but on prolonged continuous exposure both light exposed and normal ratios dropped to the dark control value once more. This drop did not occur if the animals were exposed to a 12 h light/dark cycle. These results are taken as suggesting that part of the protein synthesis of the visual cortex is functionally controlled, and that neuronal and neuropil fractions show a metabolic relationship which can be affected by environmental changes. The failure to show a depression of incorporation in prolonged exposure, by comparison with earlier results under somewhat different behavioural conditions, was taken as further evidence for the ‘state-dependence’ of a number of brain biochemical parameters.

    Notes: Incorporation of lysine into acid-insoluble material from subcellular fractions of rat cerebral cortex has been studied using double and single-labelling techniques, in littermates reared for 50 days in the dark and then dark-maintained or light-exposed for 1 h. When light-exposed animals were compared to dark controls the only subcellular fraction from the whole cortex in which lysine incorporation shows a significant elevation (168%, P 〈 0.05) was located in the ribosomal pellet of the cerebral cortex. A similar comparison of subcellular fractions from visual and motor cortices showed that the elevation was again in the ribosomes and confined to visual cortex only. Motor cortex of light-exposed animals showed a small depression of incorporation in ribosomes as compared to dark controls. Sub-fractionation of nuclei from whole cortex preparations showed varying, but non-significant elevations in light-exposed animals in all but the histone fraction in which there was negligible incorporation of precursor. It is concluded that enhancement of incorporation of precursor into proteins of the cerebral cortex, which accompanies first exposure to light, is a complex response. At exposure for 1 h it involves a number of particular protein species located in the visual cortex, a major proportion of which are ribosomally bound.

    Notes: Abstract— β-N-Acetyl D-galactosaminidase was studied in isolated neuronal and neuropil fractions from cerebral cortex and subcellular fractions derived from them. Although the enzyme activity evinced some latency properties, its subcellular distribution pattern was broader than that observed with other acid hydrolases. By contrast with nine other acid hydrolases, it was more active in neuropil than neuronal fractions (neuronal/neuropil activity ratio 0.63). This ratio was preserved in lysosomal subfractions derived from the isolated cell fractions. The data is taken as further evidence for the microheterogeneity of lysosomal particles from the brain.
