Notes: Abstract. We report a case of a glomus tumor in the trachea which was an incidental finding in a 66-year-old man. The histological picture and immunohistochemical profile were typical for this tumor. The glomus tumor is an exceedingly rare mass lesion in the trachea, but it is useful to keep it among differential diagnostic alternatives when a tracheal tumor is seen on radiographs or endoscopy.

Notes: The popular image of work and working in Scandinavia is highly contradictory. One discourse stresses the strict work ethic of Scandinavian people and the participation of the whole population in wage labor. Another discourse says that welfare states have undermined the motivation of people in Scandinavian to work. This article explores the argumentation of both discourses and compares the industry of people in Finland, Norway and Sweden with the situation in other OECD countries. The picture that unfolds is contradictory: Scandinavia has a high labor market participation rate, but Norwegian people nonetheless work only comparatively few hours, Finnish people work long hours, while Swedish people fall somewhere in-between. Overall, the people of Scandinavia are certainly not the most hard-working in the world, but the amount of work does not seem to correlate directly with the national standard of living.

Notes: Scholars have always disagreed about the definition and measurement of poverty. This article looks at these issues in the light of Finnish poverty research. The chief target of the methodological criticism is the use of equivalence scales or units of individual consumption in the comparison of individual people's disposable income. The main argument against this method is that it tends to be based on the implicit assumption that “people with low incomes need less money”. Another major concern is to demonstrate the key significance of the empirical definition of poverty. Different methods of calculation single out very different groups of poor people Furthermore, part of the poor people are excluded from all conventional definitions.

Notes: Summary The striatal homovanillic acid (HVA) and cerebral 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) concentrations were estimated in male mice withdrawn from 3- to 5-day morphine treatment (total dose: 1,100–2,350 mg/kg). All mice were given probenecid (200 mg/kg, 2 hours). The HVA concentration was decreased (by 26%) in mice withdrawn from 3-day treatment, but the 5-HIAA concentration fell (by 22%) only after 4-day treatment. An acute morphine dose (30 mg/kg, 2 hours) clearly elevated the HVA concentration in mice withdrawn from 4-day treatment, but mice withdrawn from 3-day treatment tended to be tolerant to the HVA concentration elevating effect of morphine. The acute dose increased the 5-HIAA concentration in mice withdrawn from 4-day treatment by 20–40%, but the mice withdrawn from 3-day treatment were clearly tolerant to this effect of morphine. These results suggest that endogenous activities of dopaminergic and 5-HTergic neurons are attenuated by repeated morphine treatment. However, such attenuation seems to reactivate these neurons to respond to acute morphine administration nearly normally.

Notes: Abstract In the ENT Department of University Central Hospital, Turku, the waiting list for elective septoplasty grew to 4 to 5 years in the late 1980s. Therefore, a prospective clinical project was initiated during which all patients waiting for septal surgery were re-examined and nasal airway function was measured with rhinomanometry. Patients with high nasal resistance or other specific indications for nasal obstruction were selected for surgery (n = 432). The remaining patients were excluded from surgery and followed up (n = 284). Results showed that if patients were referred for septal surgery without rhinomanometric study, about 10% became symptom-free within 3 to 5 years. Patients operated on after defining a high preoperative intranasal resistance had a higher postoperative satisfaction level (85%) than those operated on with normal nasal resistances but other indications for correcting the nasal septum (69%). After 3 years, the majority of patients not treated surgically were satisfied with their conservative treatments, although certain patients still required some form of nasal surgery to relieve recurring nasal and/or sinus complaints.

Notes: Summary Stereochemical studies on the formation of the diastereomers of arylglycerol-β-aryl ether structures during lignin biosynthesis have been carried out with model compounds. The addition of water to quinone methides of the β-syringyl ether type gives arylglycerol β-syringyl ethers with a predominance of the erythro isomer when the pH of the medium is low. Since erythro forms of arylglycerol β-syringyl ethers are prevalent in hardwood lignins, this indicates that the pH of the medium in which lignin biosynthesis occurs is lower than has been assumed until now. Equilibration studies with non-phenolic model compounds of the arylglycerolβ-guaiacyl ether and β-syringyl ether types under acidolysis conditions indicate that the erythro predominance observed in the syringyl ethers in lignins does not correspond to equilibrium conditions. A remarkable resistance to acidolysis is observed in the model compounds of etherified syringylglycerol β-syringyl ether type.
