    Notes: Protein solubility of cod fillets sealed under vacuum was significantly higher at all sampling times than from fillets sealed in presence of air during an 18 months storage study at −25°C. Frozen storage resulted in substantial loss of protein from all of the bands of the PAGE pattern, with more pronounced loss from the myosin heavy chain, actin and tropomyosin bands. Dimethylamine and malonaldehyde concentrations were not significantly different between the air and vacuum pack. Significant losses in flavor and textural quality during frozen storage were detected. Crosslinking, responsible for the observed reduction in protein solubility of raw tissue, appears to be of relatively weak nature, since little toughening was detected in the cooked tissue.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present experiments was to study the potency of various inflammatory mediators to modulate the clearance rate of125I-albumin through bovine aortic endothelial cell (BAEC) monolayer on polycarbonate micropore membrane. The incubation of BAEC with LTD4 (10−8–10−6 M) increased dose-dependently the permeability to radioactive albumin. The effect was potentiated by addition of PAF (10−5 M). LTC4 had a less potent action on the clearance rate of125I-albumin, since only the highest dose of LTC4 used (10−6 M) had a significant effect, and it was not potentiated by PAF (10−5 M). The treatment with PAF alone at concentration up to 10−5 M did not increase the125I-albumin clearance rate. Our results suggest that BAEC may bear specific receptors for LTC4 and LTD4 or that LTC4 is not converted to LTD4 by BAEC. Our results also suggest that LTD4 could possibly stimulate the expression of PAF receptors on BAEC.

    Notes: Abstract Three tree species are traditionally conserved in the traditional slash and burn agricultural system practiced for the production of upland rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) in the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea, i.e. (Parinari excelsa [Sabine], Parkia biglobosa [Jacq.) Benth.], Erythrophleum guinensis [G. Don.]). Sampling a chronosequence of fallow sites indicated that extractable P; exchangeable K, Ca and Mg; cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pH all decreased over the fallow period with patterns that differed with soil depth. Soils under the remnant Parinari excelsa and Parkia biglobosa trees had higher concentrations of organic C; total N; extractable P; exchangeable K, Ca and Mg; total P and Ca; and CEC than did the open microsites. Extractable P; exchangeable K, Ca and Mg; total P and Ca; and CEC were greater under Parinari excelsa than under Erythrophleum guinensis. Intensive measurements of a single mature fallow site showed that the foliar nutrient concentration of the large trees was not an accurate index of which microsite had the greatest accumulation of biomass and nutrients in the aboveground fallow vegetation. The biomass and the total amounts of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the fallow vegetation were significantly greater for the Parinari excelsa and Parkia biglobosa microsites than for the open microsites. We conclude that although the nutrient status of the soils decreased over the 8-year fallow period, the microsites under the large trees were generally more fertile than the open microsites. However, there were important differences in the effects of the different tree species.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of anaphylaxis on vascular protein extravasation in selected tissues and on the release of prostaglandins in the peritoneal cavity were studied in sensitized rats. Extravasation of Evans blue dye was used as a measure of vascular permeability. Specific antigen challenge increased by 279, 297, 328, 250, and 192% the protein extravasation in the trachea, upper and lower bronchi, pancreas, and duodenum, respectively, but did not modify significantly the vascular permeability of the lung parenchyma, heart, liver, and kidney. Extravasation of Evans blue dye also was increased by 43-fold in the peritoneal cavity. Pretreatment of the animals with indomethacin (10 mg/kg) did not modify significantly the protein extravasation of the trachea, upper and lower bronchi, pancreas, and duodenum induced by anaphylaxis. Pretreatment with a mixture of mepyramine (3 mg/kg) and methysergide (2.5 mg/kg) reduced by 62, 66, and 40% the protein extravasation in the trachea, upper bronchi, and peritoneal cavity, respectively, in similar conditions. The PAF antagonist BN-52021 (5 mg/kg) very strongly reduced the protein extravasation elicited by anaphylaxis in the trachea, upper and lower bronchi, pancreas, and duodenum by 72, 87, 82, 67, and 85%, respectively, and by 53% in the peritoneal cavity. Anaphylaxis also increased the concentrations of thromboxane B2 and leukotriene B4 in the peritoneal exudates, but prostaglandin E2 levels were not affected. Pretreatment with BN-52021 reduced by 29 and 75 % the level of thromboxane B2 and leukotriene B4 in the exudates. These results suggest that PAF, histamine, and serotonin mediate the protein extravasation associated with anaphylaxis, whereas prostaglandins are likely to play a minor role in this reaction.

    Notes: The neutral counterparts of the C2H7O+ isomers CH3O+ (H)CH3, CH3CH2OH2+ and \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm C}_2 \,{\rm H}_4 \,\, \cdot \cdot \cdot \mathop {\rm H}\limits^ + \, \cdot \cdot \cdot {\rm OH}_2 $\end{document} were studied by neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry. Protonated dimethyl ether and its  - O(D)+ analogue were produced by protonation (deuteration) of dimethyl ether and also generated as a fragment ion from (labeled) ionized CH3OCH2CH(OH)CH3 by loss of CH3CO⋅. It was observed that the dissociation characteristics of the ions and the stability of their neutral counterpart depended on the internal energy of the protonated ether ions. Stable neutral CH3Ȯ(H)CH3 was only produced from energy-rich ions. The classical protonated ethanol ion CH3CH2OH2+ (a) was produced at threshold by the loss of CH3CO⋅. from ionized butane-2,3-diol. Mixtures of a with the non-classical ion \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm C}_2 \,{\rm H}_4 \,\, \cdot \cdot \cdot \mathop {\rm H}\limits^ + \, \cdot \cdot \cdot {\rm OH}_2 $\end{document} (b) were produced by reaction of C2H5+ ions with H2O. As for the protonated ether, only high-energy a and/or b ions yielded stable hypervalent radicals. It is suggested that the stable C2H7⋅O radicals are Rydberg states.

    Notes: The low-energy fragmentation characteristics of the [H3,C,N,O2]+· isomers [H3CNO2]+· (a), [H2C=N(O)OH]+· (b), [H3CONO]+· (c), [HC(O)NHOH]+· (d) and [HC(OH)=NOH]+· (e) were studied in detail by metastable ion mass spectrometry. In agreement with most earlier observations, appearance energy measurements established the potential energy surface of the isomers a, b and c, showing the intricate interrelations between them. It was concluded that a isomerizes into b prior to fragmentation by loss of ·OH and H2O and into c before loss of ·H and H3CO· moreover, the reverse reactions do not take place on the metastable time-frame. The dominant metastable process for isomers d and e (obtained via HCN loss from glyoxime) was generation of [H2NOH]+·. For isomer e this process was proposed to involved a rate-determining isomerization into d. It was concluded that isomers d and e do not intercommunicate with ions a, b and c prior to fragmentation. Neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry indicated that the enol form of formohydroxamic acid as well as the keto counterpart are stable in the gas phase.
