    Notes: The oscillations of two resistively coupled Josephson junctions biased only by a single dc current source are shown to lock harmonically in a 1:2 mode over a significant range of bias current, even when the junctions are identical. The dependence of this locking on both junction and coupling parameters is examined, and it is found that, for this particular two-junction configuration, 1:1 locking can never occur, and also that a minimum coupling coefficient is needed to support harmonic locking. Some issues related to subharmonic locking are also discussed.

    Notes: Analog circuits are described which are capable of electronically simulating the static and dynamic behavior of superconducting loops containing one or two Josephson junctions when bias currents or magnetic fields are applied. Time-dependent flux entry into or out of the ring can, in either system, be observed by monitoring appropriate node voltages within the simulator circuits. The various dynamical modes observed in earlier numerical simulations are accurately reproduced. A theoretical analysis of the two-junction configuration identifies certain important criteria which determine which of these different states the system will adopt.

    Notes: A torque converter and an electronic driver circuit are described that will generate a compensating applied torque that is equal and opposite to the frictional torque of a bearing over a range of angular velocities. The compensated bearing is effectively frictionless. The frictional torque is assumed to have a constant component and one that is proportional to the angular velocity.

    Notes: An experimental technique to measure the spatial surface B field distribution in a high Tc superconductor in the temperature range 15–90 K and low applied magnetic fields (less than 300 Oe) is described. A model of magnetic dipoles has been used to describe the magnetic properties of these superconductors. The surface B field is calculated and compared with the experimental data. The experimental surface B field data are used to calculate the spatial current distribution in the superconductor by a two-dimensional Fourier transform.

    Notes: A novel circuit is described which functions as an electronic analog of lumped element transmission line. The circuit requires only operational amplifiers, resistors, and capacitors. This module was coupled to a Josephson junction simulator and current voltage characteristics of the combined system were recorded. Steps were observed at voltages determined by the appropriate line resonances. When the transmission line was terminated with loads less than the characteristic impedance, chaos was seen in the lower steps. Similar results were obtained by numerical integration of the corresponding system of differential equations.

    Notes: An instrument suitable for experimental studies of chaotic motion is described. It consists of a mechanical pendulum driven by both steady and alternating torques, together with interface electronics for data logging. An optical shaft encoder serves as the transducer for measuring the instantaneous pendulum coordinate. The entire system is controlled from a personal computer. Sample phase-plane and Poincaré plots are presented.

    Notes: A system composed of two Josephson junctions connected by a transmission line has been studied by means of electronic analog simulation. Under external current bias, the resistive component of the coupling induces frequency locking between the two junctions at commensurate ratios. The resonant modes of the transmission line give rise to steps in the I-V characteristics of the system.
