Notes: Summary We compared the effects of four vitamin D metabolites, 1α,25 dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3), 1α hydroxy vitamin D3 (1αOH D3), 25 hydroxy vitamin D3 (25 OH D3), and 24R,25 dihydroxy vitamin D (24R,25(OH)2D3) on resorption and collagen synthesis in fetal rat bone maintained in organ culture. Resorption was quantitated by measuring the release of previously incorporated45Ca from long bone shafts of 19-day fetal rats, and collagen synthesis was assessed by measuring the incorporation of3H-proline into collagenase digestible protein (CDP) in calvaria from 21-day fetal rats. All four compounds stimulated bone resorption and inhibited collagen synthesis, but 1α,25(OH)2D3 was approximately 1000 times more potent in both organ culture systems. Although the differences were small among the other three compounds, the order of potency was 1αOH D3〉25 OH D3≧24R,25(OH)2D3. These results suggest that the receptor for 1α25(OH)2D3 in both bone resorbing and bone forming cells has similar affinities for several vitamin D metabolites.

Notes: The flux synthesis of single crystals of the isostructural compounds tristrontium zinc platinum hexaoxide, Sr3ZnPtO6, and tristrontium cadmium platinum hexaoxide, Sr3CdPtO6, is reported. The compounds adopt the pseudo-one-dimensional rhombohedral K4CdCl6 structure type, and feature chains of face-shared distorted ZnO6 or CdO6 trigonal prisms and PtO6 octahedra, surrounded by columns of Sr2+ ions. All transition metals are located on the threefold axis of symmetry, while the Sr2+ cations lie on twofold axes.

Notes: Single crystals of tetracalcium iridium hexaoxide, Ca4IrO6, tricalcium magnesium iridium hexaoxide, Ca3MgIrO6, and tricalcium zinc iridium hexaoxide, Ca3ZnIrO6, were prepared via high-temperature flux growth and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three compounds are isostructural and adopt the K4CdCl6 structure type, comprised of chains of alternating face-shared [CaO6], [MgO6] or [ZnO6] trigonal prisms and [IrO6] octahedra, surrounded by columns of Ca2+ ions.

Notes: Single crystals of the title coordination polymer, [CuCl(C5H3N2O2)(H2O)], have been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. The compound is composed of infinite one-dimensional chains of pseudo-square-pyramidal CuII ions connected via pyrazine-2-carboxylate ligands. A network of O—H...O hydrogen bonding between adjacent chains is responsible for a bilayer structure different from the previously reported polymorph.

Notes: Abstract We measured systemic serum levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) during the preoperative, anhepatic, and postreperfusional phases up to the 7th postoperative day in 60 patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (LTx). In contrast to IL-1β, IL-1ra, TNF-α, and IL-6 showed a significant elevation in relation to the early phase after reperfusion, while TNF-α displayed a high grade of scatter. In addition, IL-1ra levels were significantly elevated during the anhepatic phase. Maximum serum levels were found at 15 min after reperfusion, 120 min after reperfusion, and on the 1st postoperative day, respectively. Serum levels decreased considerably at 24 h and 7 days after reperfusion. The comparative monitoring of systemic cytokine and cytokine antagonist levels, in particular the liberation of IL-1ra and IL-6 may provide useful parameters for the development of new liver preservation theories for LTx.

Notes: Abstract Serum levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) were investigated in the perioperative phase of liver transplantation (LTx) in order to help determine whether this cytokine might serve as a parameter for preservation injury. In a study of 45 patients undergoing LTx, systemic IL-8 was estimated at the end of the anhepatic phase, at 30, 60, and 120 min after reperfusion of the graft, and 24 h and 7 days after LTx. A maximum mean concentration of 665 ± 135 pg/ml was seen 60 min after LTx. The minimum was found on the 1st postoperative day (POD 1): 328 ± 33 pg/ml. Significant changes were found between 60 min and PODs 1 and 7, as well as between 120 min and POD 1. Differences in cold ischemia time were not found to be significant. We conclude that monitoring of systemic IL-8 levels is not useful in the development of new liver preservation concepts.

    Notes: Abstract [HB(3,4,5-Me3pz)3]2Zn (1) and [H2B(3,4,5-Me3pz)2]Zn(μ-3,4,5-Me3pz)2Zn[H2B(3,4,5-Me3pz)2] (2) are present in equal amounts in a crystal in the triclinic space group, P-1 with a = 11.5924(11) Å, b = 12.7799(12) Å, c = 15.7317(14) Å α = 107.905(2)° β = 96.796(2)°, γ = 105.786(2)°, and Z = 1. The structure of 1 is a trigonally distorted octahedron and is very similar to the structure of [HB(3,5-Me2pz)3]2Zn showing that the introduction of the third methyl group on the pyrazolyl ring does not impact on structure. [H2B(pz)2]2Zn (3) is orthorhombic, Pca2(1) with a = 10.1473(3) Å, b = 11.1117(2) Å, c = 14.1831(5) Å, α = β = γ = 90° and Z = 4. The zinc(II) centers in both 2 and 3 are similar and have pseudotetrahedral structures.

Notes: The effect of dissolved carbon dioxide on the specific growth rate and the penicillin production rate of Penicillium chrysogenum was examined experimentally. The dissolved carbon dioxide was found to inhibit the specific growth rate and the penicillin production rate when the aerated submerged penicillin fermentation was exposed to influent gases of 12.6 and 20% carbon dioxide, respectively. Upon exposure to influent gases of 3 and 5% carbon dioxide, no pronounced metabolic inhibition was noted.
