Notes: Abstract The electrical conductivity of some 5-(m-substituted phenylazo) barbituric acid derivatives as well as their copper(II) complexes has been measured in the temperature range 297 to 443 K. The results revealed semiconducting properties for these systems. The conductivity curves in most cases gave two different activation energies. Both the structure of the ligand and the temperature played an effective role in the conduction process. Empirical equations correlating the activation energy to the conductivity are given. The mobility was calculated and a hopping model is proposed to explain the conduction process.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this work is to investigate a new method for detecting chatter in milling. In this method, the spindle drive current signal of a vertical milling machine is used for monitoring process instability. Both simulations and experimental work are conducted. Results show that current signals can transmit chatter frequencies reliably. The sensitivity of the current signal to slight process instability is assessed. A statistical indicator, the R-value is used to evaluate this sensitivity. Statistical analysis of experimental data shows that the R-value is insensitive to variations in speed, feed and geometry of cut. Also, experiments show that slight variations in the process instability results in a significant increase in the R-value.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of seven new complexes of mixed ligands and metals are reported. Their stoichiometries (metals:ligands) were found to be 1∶3, 2∶2 and 3∶2 corresponding to FeL12L2H, M2L1L2 and M′M2L1L2, respectively (where M′ = Cu2+, M = Cu2+, Co2+ or Ni2+; HL1 = Methyl Red; H2L2 = Alizarin Yellow R). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and Nujol mull electronic spectra and magnetic moment measurements. The results of the electrical conductivity studies for the prepared complexes in the solid state (using compressed tablets) indicated reasonable semiconducting properties. The magnitude of these values, logσ291 lay between −5.46 and −8.67, resulting from the structure and nature of the substituent of the two mixed ligands as well as the high metallic content of their complexes.

Notes: Abstract The calcium-sensing receptor (CASR), a member of the G-protein coupled receptor family, is expressed in both parathyroid and kidney, and aids these organs in sensing extracellular calcium levels. Inactivating mutations in the CASR gene have been described in familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) and neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism (NSHPT). Activating mutations in the CASR gene have been described in autosomal dominant hypoparathyroidism and familial hypocalcemia. The human CASR gene was mapped to Chromosome (Chr) 3q13.3-21 by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). By somatic cell hybrid analysis, the gene was localized to human Chr 3 (hybridization to other chromosomes was not observed) and rat Chr 11. By interspecific backcross analysis, the Casr gene segregated with D16Mit4 on mouse Chr 16. These findings extend our knowledge of the synteny conservation of human Chr 3, rat Chr 11, and mouse Chr 16.
