    Notes: Isolates of 85 bacteria and 94 streptomycete and 35 nonstreptomycete actinomycetes were obtained from a lettuce-growing field in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates, on colloidal chitin agar, and screened for their ability to produce chitinase. Twenty-three bacteria and 38 streptomycete and 15 nonstreptomycete actinomycete isolates produced high levels of chitinase and were examined in vitro for their ability to suppress the growth of Sclerotinia minor, a pathogen causing basal drop disease of lettuce. The three most suppressive isolates were examined further for their production of β-1,3-glucanase and antifungal activity as well as their ability to colonize the roots and rhizosphere of lettuce in vitro and in planta. The three isolates, Serratia marcescens, Streptomyces viridodiasticus and Micromonospora carbonacea, significantly reduced the growth of S. minor in vitro, and produced high levels of chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase. Streptomyces viridodiasticus also produced antifungal metabolite(s) that significantly reduced the growth of the pathogen in vitro. When the pathogen was presented as the sole carbon source, all three isolates caused extensive hyphal plasmolysis and cell wall lysis. Serratia marcescens and St. viridodiasticus were competent to varying degrees in colonizing the roots of lettuce seedlings after 8 days on agar plates and the rhizosphere within 14 days in pots, with their competency being superior to that of M. carbonacea. All three isolates, individually or in combination, were antagonistic to S. minor and significantly reduced incidence of disease under controlled glasshouse conditions.

    Notes: Background  Neurotrophin (NT)-3 and its high-affinity receptor tyrosine kinase C (Trk C) are essential for nervous system development. These members of the NT family are also involved in murine hair morphogenesis and cycling. However, their role in human hair follicle (HF) biology remains to be elucidated.Objectives  To explore the role of NTs in human skin and HF biology.Methods  The immunoreactivity (IR) of NT-3 and Trk C was studied in human scalp skin and HFs by immunofluorescent and light microscopic immunohistology. Skin biopsies were obtained from normal human scalp containing mainly anagen VI HFs from women (age 53–57 years) undergoing elective plastic surgery.Results  Both NT-3 and Trk C showed prominent, yet distinct, IR patterns in human scalp anagen HFs (anagen VI), whereas they were weakly expressed in catagen and increased again in telogen HFs. Within HF compartments, NT-3 IR was prominent in the outer root sheath, inner root sheath, dermal papilla and connective tissue sheath. Trk C IR was prominent in all HF epithelial and mesenchymal compartments. Outside the HF, both NT-3 and Trk C showed prominent IR in the epidermis, sebaceous glands and sweat glands.Conclusions  These observations provide the first indication that NT-3 and Trk C are expressed in human scalp skin and HFs, and suggest that Trk C-mediated signalling is involved not only in murine but also in human HF biology. They may be useful in determining therapeutic strategies for the treatment of hair cycle and skin-related disorders.

    Notes: The study egtailed bacteriological investigation of 131 cases of impetigo contagiosa, including the isolation and identification of the offending organisms. The data showed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in pure culture in 40.5% of the cases, and in mixed growth with betahaemolytic streptococci and other organisms in 47% of the cases. Streptococci came next in frequency and were isolated in pure culture from 9.1% of cases, and in combination with other organisms in 36.7% of the cases. A haemolytic diphtheroid having the characteristics of Corynebacterium pyogenes was isolated in pure culture from one case and in mixed growth in 5.3% of the cases.

    Notes: Summary 1. The cis-forms of higher, unsaturated fatty acids, oleic and erucic markedly stimulated riboflavin synthesis while the transforms, elaidic and brassidic, had no effect. C8−C12 saturated fatty acids completely arrested the growth. 2. Some, locally available, oils showed some stimulation to riboflavin synthesis while showing a greater stimulation to growth. However the hydrolysates of these oils were either completely inhibitive to, ineffective upon, or slightly stimulatory to riboflavin synthesis. 3. The stimulation of oleic acid of the hydrolysates of olive oil depended upon the preservation of its degree of unsaturation. 4. The strong stimulation, caused by the nonsap. materials of lanolin, accounts for almost all the stimulation caused by the hydrolysates of this fat. However, cholesterol is not the nonsap. material responsible for this stimulation. 5. Some surface active agents such as lecithin, and saponin stimulated the vitamin formation. Of the detergents tested only tween 80 and, to a lesser extent, tween 60 showed a marked increase in the riboflavin yield in the shake cultures.
