    Notizen: The range of carriers in thin crystalline films of the conjugated polydiacetylene derivatives 3 and 4BCMU [with the side groups R1=R2=–(CH2)3–OCO–NH–CH2–COOC4H9 and –(CH2)4–OCO–NH–CH2–COOC4H9] are demonstrated to be greater than 110 and 90 μm, respectively, and the quantum efficiencies for carrier generation are determined. The films are created as a result of electron-beam-induced topochemical polymerization of a thin surface layer on a crystalline monomer substrate. The polymer films are subsequently separated from the underlying monomer and deposited onto a series of interdigitated electrodes with varying interelectrode separation. The range and generation efficiencies are deduced by measuring the photocharge induced on the electrode system as a result of a laser pulse. Comparisons are made with bulk single crystals. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The spectroscopic properties of the chains of the polydiacetylene (PDA) poly-4BCMU, diluted in their single-crystal monomer matrix are studied and discussed in terms of the single polymer chain electronic properties, the monomer structural changes, and their mutual influence. The polymer exciton transition energy shifts considerably (by 0.3 eV) as temperature decreases, down to a value that may be the lowest transition energy yet observed in a PDA. Two first-order structural transitions of the monomer crystal are observed near 320 and 220 K. They show up in the polymer spectroscopic properties—absorption and resonance Raman scattering—as discontinuities of both wave numbers and linewidths. So, the polymer chains behave as probes of the monomer crystal structural changes. A new electronic transition is observed below the main exciton one, possibly corresponding to a state of g symmetry. A weak fluorescence is observed at low temperature. Its origin coincides with the exciton absorption. Therefore, there is no configurational relaxation in the exciton state during the fluorescence lifetime.

    Notizen: Summary Dynamic headspace and simultaneous steam distillation-extraction techniques were used to isolate volatile components of Parmesan cheese. Identification of the substances was carried out by GC and GC-MS; 110 compounds were identified in the samples obtained using the headspace technique, 105 in the extracts; among them, about 50 compounds were isolated with both procedures. Mass spectral data showed evidence for a number of newly reported compounds such as 3-(methylthio)propanal, δ-tetradecalactone, 9-tetra-decenoic and 9-hexadecenoic acids. Mass spectra of some compounds are discussed and a comparison between the results obtained with the two sampling methods is given.

    Notizen: Abstract Particle beam (PB) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-mass spectrometry (MS) has been studied to investigate its suitability for the analysis of fat-soluble vitamins, as an example of thermally labile substances. The PB LC-MS system has been used to detect and identify vitamins A, D and E in foods and multi-vitamin preparations. The qualitative performance of the PB interface has been evaluated by an examination of the working parameters. A rapid elution of the vitamins was obtained on a C8 reversed-phase column using an aqueous methanol mobile phase. Analyses have been carried out using both, electron (EI) and chemical (CI) ionization. Positive and negative-ion CI spectra of the compounds are discussed. When PB-MS conditions are optimized, the detection limits for the fat-soluble vitamins tested have been typically in the 0.6–25 ng range when using the selected-ion monitoring technique.
