Notes: Sparks, in a case study of the takeover of The Southland Corporation (USA) by Ito-Yokado and Seven-Eleven Japan, raised a number of fundamental questions about the nature of retail internationalisation and our understanding of the subject. This paper returns to this subject and, using an analysis of the changes in both businesses since the takeover, again explores our depth of comprehension of the processes of retail internationalisation. The changes in The Southland Corporation since 1991 have essentially replicated the Japanese convenience store model and produced a business turnaround. This illustrates both the depth and length of components of internationalisation. The stage is now set for the global transformation of the business.

Notes: The financial services sector operates in a turbulent environment. The availability of financial services for customers has grown considerably, with providers encompassing retailers through to specialists. Food retailers in particular are the non-financial sector key movers in the market change underway. Within this context, this paper aims to provide a framework to consider the operational, strategic and relational issues concerned with the entry of British food retailers into the financial services sector. It explores in particular the service provision relationships between large food retailers and financial institutions, suggesting that this is a case of co-opetition, a concept which refers to the concomitant presence of competition and co-operation in a relationship. Promoters and inhibitors leading to a co-opetitive relationship involvement are examined.

Notes: The 1990s have seen a major expansion in both the interest in retailing as an academic research subject and in the availability of European retail academic journals. Using a bibliometric approach, this paper investigates the development of published academic retail research in these journals. It identifies different emphases within the retail journals and retail research. Overall, however, retailing is identified increasingly as a synthetic rather than an interdisciplinary subject. A gulf between the direction that European scholars and US scholars are following is considered.

Notes: Purpose - A case study of Marks and Spencer (M&S) in Hong Kong is used to explore aspects of the retail internationalisation process. Design/methodology/approach - The case study is developed from four main sources. First, national and trade press commentary on M&S's internationalisation. Secondly, M&S's publications and statements about their international activities. Thirdly, previous research on M&S in Hong Kong, including work by the authors. Finally, informal interviews with current and former M&S management involved in the Hong Kong development. The case study is organised into a description of phases of exporting, store development and crises. This is followed by a discussion of the key internationalisation issues raised in terms of market entry, maintenance and exit. Conclusions follow. Findings - The study emphasises that internationalisation is a non-linear, ongoing, dynamic activity involving developments, impacts and retrenchment at a variety of levels. Implications for future research in the area are drawn. Research limitations/implications - This is a case study of a particular retailer's internationalisation process in a particular country. The processes in other retailers operating other formats and selling other products and in other countries may be different. Further case studies will allow the generation of a wider understanding of the issues. Originality/value - The case study provides previously unpublished information on the retail internationalisation process as a whole. It encourages other comparative studies and further research into the topic.

Notes: Environmental issues have become progressively more important during the1980s and 1990s. With greater concern about the environment, pressure, both formal and informal, has mounted on business. One of the mostdeveloped formal constraints has emerged in Germany, with theintroduction of packaging laws to reduce packaging and encourage reuseand recycling. Such legislation affects both German companies andcompanies exporting into Germany. It can be argued that exporters aredisadvantaged by such legislation, having to adapt their activities toeach country. This presupposes knowledge of the legislation and awillingness and ability to change and embrace the new constraints.Reports on the new German packaging laws and on a survey of firmsexporting to Germany, which examines their awareness of and compliancewith these laws.

Notes: Recent years have seen a plethora of media comments about prices in Britain compared to overseas. This "rip-off Britain" campaign culminated with the two-year Competition Commission enquiry into supermarket retailing. International price comparisons, however, are not straightforward and there are many difficulties in their undertaking and in reporting such a complicated subject. This paper examines a BBC TV main news report on the night of the publication of the Competition Commission report and illustrates the problems in covering the subject. If we are to really understand pricing in British businesses compared to overseas, then much more sophisticated research and reportage is required.

Notes: The changing consumer market in Scotland in the 1980s attractedconsiderable retailer attention. Arguably, the introduction by Shoprite,in November 1990, of the deep discount format destabilized the existingcorporate retail structure and set in motion a series of challenges tothe existing retail landscape that led to a major restructuring. Thisrestructuring has involved the demise of Shoprite itself under massivepressure from established retailers and the takeover of Wm Low by Tescoafter a bidding war with J Sainsbury. Details the story of Shoprite'srise and demise and the linked takeover of Wm Low, and discusses theirimportance.

Notes: Argos is Europe's most successful catalogue showroom retailer, with annual sales of over £2.0bn. Its success is dependent on many aspects of its retail system, but arguably the key component is the requirement to get the catalogue into the hands of potential customers. The catalogues are therefore advanced selling systems in their own right, which provide information on product retailing and consumption of the time. This paper takes the first Argos catalogue of 1973/1974 and compares it with the 50th catalogue produced in 1998. Whilst using arbitrary dates and issues, the analysis allows us to consider aspects of retailing, product and consumer change. The comparison demonstrates changes in presentation techniques and merchandising. The product mix is much altered with considerable product development, both in terms of technological change and "lifestyle" components.

Notes: Customer loyalty as a concept is inherently attractive to retail businesses. In many companies however, customer loyalty is operationalised through the activities of an often part-time and transient workforce. The case illustration presented here, and in particular the analysis of employee responses on issues of loyalty scheme construction and operation, raises two main issues. For any retailer operating a loyalty scheme, these findings raise considerable management implications.

Notes: British retailers have been at the forefront of logistical changes. By taking control of distribution channels they have transformed their operations. Much of the process by which this has been achieved is well covered in the literature. This paper looks at the macro issues involved and the under-pinning concepts in logistical transformation in retailing, and attempts to synthesize and provide an overview of the literature. The paper concludes by raising a series of questions about the future.
