    Notes: Abstract Immobilized cells of Bacillus licheniformis 44MB82-G were used for the production of thermostable α-amylase. The immobilization was carried out by entrapment in agar gel or by binding to formaldehyde-activated acrylonitrile/acrylamide membranes. The α-amylase production after 144 h of cultivation of membrane immobilized cells was 40% higher in comparison with the free cells. The respective value for the agar-entrapped cells was 22%. Similar trends were observed in the repeated batch fermentations performed with the immobilized cells. The scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the immobilized cells gave additional information about their binding to the respective carriers.

    Notes: Cells of Bacillus licheniformis 44MB82-G immobilized on different polymer membranes were used for production of thermostable α-amylase. The α-amylase yields of the membrane-immobilized cells were affected by the reactive chemical groups of the carriers and the spacer size. Formaldehyde-activated polysulphone membranes (PS-FA) were the most suitable for effective immobilization. The highest amylase yield (62% increase of the control) and operational stability (97% residual activity after 480 h repeated batch cultivation) were obtained with this system. This was confirmed by scanning electron micrographs. An additional increase of α-amylase production by PS-FA-membrane immobilized cells was achieved in a fluidized-bed reactor.

    Notes: Enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose is potentially an attractive method for converting cellulose into glucose which can then be used as a chemical feed or as a growth substrate for a number of microorganisms to produce microbial products.An enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw with cellulase preparation “Trichocease” was made. The wheat straw used was pretreated mechanically and with NaOH. A procedure of pretreatment was investigated in 26 variants. The dynamics of enzymatic hydrolysis was studied. An assay of this dynamics based on the amount of reducing sugars formed during the cellulase reaction and depending upon enzyme and substrate concentration and time of action was carried out.
