Notes: Abstract A rule based fuzzy controller (FLC) is developed for stabilization of an unstable continuous stirred tank bioreactor (CSTBR) from various start-up conditions. The output variable is the reactor substrate concentration and the manipulated variable is the dilution rate. The performance of the FLC is evaluated by simulating a mathematical model of an unstable CSTBR. FLC is robust to perturbations in the specific growth rate, specific consumption rate and also to a disturbance in the feed substrate concentration. The performance of the FLC is superior to that of a conventional proportional controller.

Notes: An analysis of the deformation of a homogeneous electrical field caused by a long, thin inclined bed, which is of considerable importance in the exploration of ground water and minerals, is presented using the Hilbert transform. The thickness of the bed and the inclination are expressed as a function of the abscissae of the points of intersection of the horizontal and vertical derivatives of the field. The procedure is illustrated with a theoretical example and substantiated with field examples from the fractured Crystalline Basement Complex in Burkina Faso, Africa, and Pre-Cambrian limestones of the Cuddappah Basin in Andhra Pradesh, India. The results derived from the analytical method are shown to agree well with the ground truth.

Notes: After completing a BA in social philosophy from Mysore, I went to Bombay to do graduate work in sociology with GS Ghurye, who had been a student of WHR Rivers at Cambridge in the 1920s. At the end of eight years, I became disillusioned with diffusionism and unfocused ethnography. I then went to Oxford, where I worked first with AR Radcliffe-Brown and then EE Evans-Pritchard. At Oxford, I became a structural- functionalist, albeit a somewhat skeptical one. After teaching at Oxford from 1948 to 1951, I returned to India to teach sociology at the University of Baroda. Eight years later, I went to the University of Delhi as Professor of Sociology, and finally moved to Bangalore in 1972 to start, with VKRV Rao, the Institute for Social and Economic Change. As an anthropologist, I am somewhat of a maverick in that I study my own culture and not any distant Other.

Notes: Abstract The effect of cyclosporine (CsA) on fertility has assumed greater importance with the increasing numbers of pediatric transplantations being performed all over the world. Conflicting reports on the effects of CsA on sex hormones are available. This experimental animal study was designed to examine the effect of CsA on testicular weight, sperm counts, seminiferous tubular diameter (STD), testicular morphology, DNA flowcytometry, sex hormone levels, and fertility in male rats. Those rats who received CsA (20 mg/kg per day) showed significant reductions in testicular weight (P 〈 0.05), sperm count (P 〈 0.01), Johnsen score (P 〈 0.05), STD (P 〈 0.01), serum testosterone levels (P 〈 0.05), haploid cell population (P 〈 0.001) in the testis, and fertility (P 〈 0.001) compared to those receiving CsA 10 mg/kg per day and control rats. These findings will have an important bearing for children receiving cyclosporine for long periods to guide the physician in optimally adjusting long-term treatment.

Notes: Abstract Continuing experimental work on the effect of experimentally created unilateral undescended testis (UL-UDT) in neonatal rats, this study examined the fertility and correlated it to contralateral (CL) testicular morphology, seminiferous tubular diameter (STD), DNA flowcytometry, and the presence of serum anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) at 120–135 days of age. In our previous reported work, the fertility of rats with UL-UDT at 65–80 days of age was the same as that of controls. In the present study the rats with UL-UDT had significantly reduced fertility (P 〈 0.01) compared to controls, even though the Johnsen scores and mean STD of the CL testicular tissue were comparable. DNA flowcytometry demonstrated a significant decrease (P 〈 0.001) in haploid cell population in the CL testicular tissue of rats with UL-UDT. Furthermore, the rats with UL-UDT who either received an immunosuppressive or in whom the UDT was excised early showed almost normal fertility and DNA histograms like those of controls. Significantly high titres of serum ASA were detected only in the group with UL-UDT when tested at 135 days of age. From these results, in combination with earlier results on similar work, it may be inferred that UL-UDT causes immunologically-mediated, progressive damage to the CL descended testis, leading to a decrease in fertility in rats.

Notes: Abstract. Five sources of nitrogen, six minerals, six enzyme inducers and one each of growth as well as product promotors were screened by Plackett–Burman design, consisting of a total of 20 experiments for the above 19 sources/categories of medium ingredients, for their effect on the production of alpha-galactosidase by Aspergillus niger MRSS 234 in solid state fermentation system. The enzyme production was recorded from 2 to 5 days of fermentation. Data on enzyme titres was analysed by compatible analysis to obtain regression coefficients and t-ratios. Among the nitrogen sources, urea contributed positively to enzyme production and its effect increased with the fermentation time, in contrast to negative effect of all the ammonium salts used. Corn steep liquor, citric acid and legume seed flours showed significantly positive effects on enzyme production, though lactose showed negative effect upto 3 days of fermentation and then turned positive but not significantly. Calcium chloride and ferrous sulphate showed considerable negative effect, in contrast to mixed effect by other mineral salts studied. Among the legume seed flours, guar and French bean flours showed larger positive effects. The studies allowed the selection of urea, corn steep liquor, guar flour, soy bean flour and citric acid as most promising sources/categories for further optimization studies based on the effects as well as their trend with fermentation time. The use of Plackett–Burman design for rapid screening of large number of nutrients, in a very small number of experiments, for reliable short-listing of a few of most effective sources/categories for further optimization has been scarce in submerged fermentation and never attempted earlier in solid state fermentation system.
