Notes: Summary Insulin and high density lipoproteins are considered to play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. In order to study whether there was a relationship between endogenous plasma insulin response and high density lipoproteins, an acute intravenous glucose tolerance test (0.5 g glucose/kg body weight) was performed in 94 healthy men, aged 20–49 years. Cholesterol and triglyceride levels were measured in very low density lipoproteins, low density lipoproteins and high density lipoproteins isolated from fasting serum by preparative ultracentrifugation. The subjects were divided into quartiles according to their fasting and post-glucose load plasma insulin and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The results obtained in the subjects of the upper quartiles were compared with the results obtained in the subjects of the lower quartiles. The mean glucose disappearance rates were within the normal range and did not differ between the upper and lower quartiles. Subjects with high fasting plasma insulin had lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (1.11±0.34 mmol/l, p=0.01) than men with low fasting plasma insulin (1.40±0.37 mmol/l). Higher mean post-glucose plasma insulin was associated with lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (1.18±0.32 mmol/l, p〈0.05) and increased high density lipoprotein triglyceride levels (0.14±0.07 mmol/l, p〈0.01) when compared with the men with low post-glucose plasma insulin (1.40±0.36 mmol/l and 0.09±0.03 mmol/l respectively). These observations reflect the close relationship between endogenous insulin and lipoprotein metabolism.

Notes: Nonresonant microwave (MW) absorption is observed at the surface of high-Tc superconducting oxides in the presence of a static magnetic field and a scanning field. Nonlinear signals are obtained that show absorption troughs at the endpoints of the field scan superimposed on a hysteretic variation in absorption with field. The model of Portis et al. accounts quantitatively for the detailed shape of the observed signals. It enables the direct measurement of a critical field H*=(4π/c)Jcλ which depends on the critical current Jc and the static field penetration depth λ. In addition, the ratio λMW/λ is deduced from the shape of the troughs, with λMW the penetration depth of the MW fields. Typical values are H*(approximately-equal-to)5 μT and λMW(approximately-equal-to)3λ for a sintered YBaCuO sample at 77 K, and nearly the same H* but λMW(approximately-equal-to)λ at 4.2 K. Since the observed shapes also depend on the previous slow changes of the applied field, these investigations account for the memory effect observed with the usual resonance techniques.

Notes: YAlO3:Er laser crystals with medium dopant concentration can emit on different transitions of the 4I11/2→4I13/2 manifolds within a laser pulse. In a 20-at. % doped a rod the three most prominent laser lines oscillate at wavelengths of λ1=2.73 μm, λ2=2.79 μm, and λ3=2.92 μm. The temporal sequence of λ1, λ2, and λ3 within a train of relaxation oscillations has been measured and is analyzed on the basis of inversion, linewidth of transitions, and ion-ion interaction in the 4I13/2 state.

Notes: Cases of mediastinal germ cell tumours associated with haematological disorders (two cases of systemic mastocytosis included) have been reported previously. This combination is more frequent than would be expected by chance alone. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman, who presented with a systemic mastocytosis following a malignant ovarian germ cell tumour which was treated by chemo- and radiotherapy. The patient predominantly complained of skeletal pains, which led to an erroneous radiological diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia for years. An aggressive variant of systemic mastocytosis was diagnosed on bone marrow examination. Systemic mastocytosis was confirmed by splenectomy, liver biopsy and finally autopsy. The present case is unique because of the ovarian location of the germ cell tumour. We suggest our observation could be related to the broad group of haematological malignancies associated with germ cell tumours.

Notes: Abstract NO2 enters spruce needles by gas exchange through the slomata. Nitrate formed from NO2 is reduced in the cytosol by nitrate reductase (NR), the rate limiting enzyme of the nitrogen assimilatory pathway. A linear relationship was found between the nitrate reductase activity (NRA), NO2 concentration and the amount of N incorporated into amino acids and proteins, so that NRA was suggested as an estimate of NO2-uptake. In the present field study, 50 spruce trees (Picea abies) have been selected, which grow in a natural habitat in a NO2 concentration gradient in a forest crossed by a highway which is a major NO source. At part of the sites, the microclimatic conditions have been recorded, so that common models of local gas exchange of the needles could be used to estimate stomatal uptake of NO2. NRA was investigated as a function of radiation and stomatal uptake on the day before needle sampling. Close to the highway NRA was permanently elevated with a maximum in summer. As with the laboratory results, a linear relationship between stomatal uptake and NRA was found. Total N — content of current year shoots was not affected by the additional N-source provided by airborne NO2. The present study shows that the gas exchange models are consistent with the physiological reactions of spruce needles on a local level and therefore contribute to the validation of calculations of NO2 dry deposition to spruce forests.
