    Notes: Abstract Ribosomal DNA ITS sequences were compared among 13 different species and biogeographic isolates from the monophyletic “albida/sericea clade” in the green algal genus Cladophora. Six distinct ITS sequence types were found, characterized by multiple insertions and deletions and high levels of nucleotide substitution. Conserved domains within the ITS regions indicate the presence of ITS secondary structure. Low transition/transversion ratios among the six types and nearly symmetrical tree-length frequency distributions indicate some saturation, and low phylogenetic signal. Although branching order among five of the six ITS sequence types could not be resolved, estimates of ITS sequence divergence as compared with 18S divergence in a subset of the taxa suggests that the origin of the different ITS types is probably in the mid-Miocene (12 Ma ago) but that biogeographic isolates within a single ITS type (including both Pacific and Atlantic representatives) have probably dispersed on a time scale of thousands rather than millions of years.

    Notes: Abstract. Amino acid sequences of α- and β-chains of human hemoglobin and of hemoglobins of coelacanth and 24 teleost fish species, including 11 antarctic and two temperate Notothenioidei, were analyzed using maximum parsimony. Trees were derived for the α- and β-chains separately and for tandemly arranged sequences, using the human and coelacanth sequences as outgroups in all analyses. The topologies of the trees of the α-and β-chains are highly congruent and indicate a specific pattern of gene duplications and gene expression of teleost hemoglobins which has not yet been investigated into more detail. The Notothenioid fish generally contain a single major hemoglobin and often a second minor component. The α- and β-chains of the major components form a monophyletic group in all investigated trees, with the nonantarctic Pseudaphritis as their sister taxon. The minor chains also are a monophyletic group and form an unresolved cluster with the major chains and the hemoglobins of tuna and red gurnard. The Notothenioid families Nototheniidae and Bathydraconidae appear to be paraphyletic.

    Notes: Abstract From anoxic intertidal sediment, a dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP)-cleaving anaerobe (strain W218) was isolated that reduced the acrylate formed to propionate. The bacterium was vibrio- to rod-shaped and motile by means of multiple polar flagella. It reduced sulfate, thiosulfate, and acrylate, and used lactate, fumarate, succinate, malate, pyruvate, ethanol, propanol, glycerol, glycine, serine, alanine, cysteine, hydrogen, and formate as electron donors. Sulfate and acrylate were reduced simultaneously; growth with sulfate was faster than with acrylate. Extracts of cells grown in the presence of DMSP contained high DMSP lyase activities (9.8 U/mg protein). The DNA mol% G+C was 45.1. On the basis of its characteristics and the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain W218 was assigned to a new Desulfovibrio species for which the name Desulfovibrio acrylicus is proposed. A variety of other sulfate-reducing bacteria (eight of them originating from a marine or saline environment and five from other environments) did not reduce acrylate.

    Notes: Abstract Genotypic relationships between seven Prochloron samples isolated from different didemnid ascidian hosts collected at the Palau archipelago and Munda (Solomon Islands) and one cyanobacterial (Synechocystis) strain were determined by DNA-DNA reassociations. Thermal stability values of DNA-DNA hybrids indicate that all Prochloron samples involved are mutually very closely related and only slightly related with the Synechocystis strain. It is concluded that the Prochloron samples tested are representatives of one and the same species.
