Notes: This paper documents a research program undertaken at the Industrial Research Institute of Swinburne University of Tech-nology (IRIS) in Melbourne Australia. The objective of the research was to investigate the potential for applying vision-based inspection of workpieces as a means of providing feed-back (i.e. compensation) for an industrial process. In this research, the emphasis was on high-accuracy identification and measurement of 3D properties from a 2D image. A number of techniques, for providing the transformation of the image, are documented. A common, sample process (i.e. the turning operation), and range of geometric entities were selected to demonstrate the methodology and to highlight various aspects of the proposed techniques. The paper concludes with a list of criteria that influence the accuracy of the final results.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Fosfomycin Trometamol wird in Italien seit mehreren Jahren klinisch eingesetzt.
Notes: Summary In order to assess the resistance profile for fosfomycin trometamol after several years of clinical use in Italy, this study has explored the susceptibility to fosfomycin and eight other antibacterial drugs of 6,021 strains isolated from 23,816 urines during 1990 in three teaching hospitals located in Genoa, Parma and Catania. Gram-negative strains, notablyEscherichia coli (41.6%), were primarily involved. Amoxicillin was the least active compound with resistance in 41.4% of the isolates. Fosfomycin showed the lowest rate of resistance in both gram-negative (2.8%) and gram-positive (2.1%) pathogens. This was followed by norfloxacin with a resistance rate of 11.8% and netilmicin with 12.2%. These results indicate that fosfomycin-trometamol may continue to be used in single-dose treatment of urinary tract infections even in the absence of microbiological data since the prevalence of resistance to the drug is, at present, so low that therapeutic failure is highly improbable.

Notes: Abstract A multicenter study was undertaken in Italy to assess the circulation of β-lactamase-producing organisms and their current incidence within the major groups of bacterial pathogens. Almost four thousand strains, all freshly isolated from clinical material, were examined at four centers serving different areas of Italy. Despite some significant center-to-center differences, this survey documented the occurrence of a large overall circulation of β-lactamase-producing organisms among clinical bacterial isolates. In particular, ampicillin resistance was recorded in one third to one half of the isolates of some Enterobacteriaceae, including Escherichia coli, Proteus, and Citrobacter species, and 80–90% of these resistant strains proved to be B-lactamase producers. Both ampicillin resistance and β-lactamase production were almost the rule in other Enterobacteriaceae, including Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Serratia species. β-lactamase was also produced by about 80% of glucose-non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria and Aeromonas hydrophila strains, by all of the isolates of Branhamella catarrhalis manifesting ampicillin resistance (i.e. more than half the total number of isolates), and by about two thirds of the ampicillin-resistantffaemophilus strains (which accounted for 20–25% of all Haemophilus isolates examined). In contrast, no B-lactamase producers were observed among Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates.

Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken for the purpose of defining the epidemiology and genetic relatedness of Staphylococcus aureus strains in a region of Italy by investigating the molecular background for which resistance to methicillin, mediated by the acquisition of another penicillin-binding protein gene, is embedded. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) data were used for phylogenetic analyses, since genetic distance values can be used as a general measure of the number of events generating distinct clones. The percentages of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates in a six-month period from inpatients and outpatients were, respectively, 12% (22 out of 180) and 0.4% (1 out of 257). On the basis of RFLP obtained after pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), it was possible to designate isolates as indistinguishable, closely related, possibly related and unrelated. We were able to demonstrate the occurrence of at least five distinct MRSA cross-infection episodes in two hospitals, four involving two patients each and one involving four patients. Phylogenetic analyses overcame the simple pairwise comparison of common bands between strains, and provided a comprehensive epidemiological scenario, identifying three major clusters of MRSA, including different levels of genetic relatedness, while excluding the circulation of a single clone in Italy. Moreover, multidimensional scaling analysis of the obtained genetic distance confirmed that MRSA strains belong to a restricted set of clones, thus demonstrating the relatedness of broad evolutionary lineages within the species S. aureus.

Notes: Abstract An outbreak ofSerratia marcescens involving 42 patients admitted to the general intensive care unit of the Hospital of Varese, Italy, occurred from March 1994 to August 1995. The causative strains were resistant to oxyimino-cephalosporins and monobactams due to their production of an extended-spectrumβ-lactamase. Another outbreak caused bySerratia marcescens strains had occurred in the same unit a few months earlier, from February to October 1993, with the strains involved producing a novel TEM-derived extended-spectrumβ-lactamase. In order to verify whether there were any relationships between isolates from the two epidemics, the strains and their enzymes were characterized. Biochemical data and gene amplification experiments showed that the isolates of the second outbreak harbored a non-conjugative plasmid of approximately 48 kb, codifying for the production of an SHV-derived extended-spectrumβ-lactamase with pI 8.2. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of total genomic DNA by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis ofSerratia marcescens isolates unambiguously identified two different bacterial clones responsible for the two epidemics. Epidemiological and microbiological investigations demonstrated the long persistence ofSerratia marcescens strains and their circulation in other hospital wards, thus suggesting their possible role as a long-term reservoir for further epidemic spread.

Notes: Summary A new experimental model of a varicocoele in the rat is proposed. The study has been carried out on the Wistar rat in which the gonadal vein enters into the iliac vein. A varicocoele was induced in different ways: by complete or imcomplete ligature of the iliac vein medial to the entry of the gonadal vein (Group I and II); by creating a venous compression by positioning the iliac artery in front of the vein, thus reproducing the so called “nut cracker” phenomenon (Group III); by creation of a small arterio-venous fistula by means of a side-to-side anastomosis between the iliac artery and vein. The results were studied macroscopically and histologically. The damage was most evident in Group III and significant in Group IV, but the absence of damage to the contralateral testis remains unexplained.
