    Notes: The rigorous calculation of top and bottom fractions of a multicomponent distillation is very time consuming and involved as it can only be done iteratively, and convergence problems are often encountered, especially in azeotropic systems. This article presents a method for the easy determination of possible top and bottom fractions of a ternary distillation. This method, which works for zeotropic as well as for azeotropic mixtures, is especially useful in the first steps of process synthesis and design since impossible separations can be determined and thus excluded from further analysis so that work can be concentrated on feasible processes. A very important application of the method developed in this article is to the design and analysis of processes for complete separation of binary azeotropic mixtures by use of an entrainer (for example, Azeotropic Distillation and Extractive Distillation). Knowledge of the separation regions in the distillation diagram allows for the development of a generalized process and the formulation of criteria for entrainer selection. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on a number of industrial important processes.

    Notes: Distillation has been, up to now, the standard method for separating fluid mixtures in the process industry and the consensus is that it will remain so for years to come. The only disadvantage of distillation is its high energy requirement. In the following, it will be demonstrated on the example of an ideal ternary mixture, how the energy requirement of distillation process can be reduced. Very effective are some modifications of single columns, optimization of column sequences and direct or indirect column coupling. It will be shown that, just by column coupling, the energy requirement can be reduced to a third.

    Notes: All the present experiments confirm that there is some liquid channelling on trays. Liquid channelling is extensive on trays of large diameters. It largely depends on the tilting of the plate, modifications of the inlet weirs and on non-uniform bubble cap spacing. Consequences of liquid channelling for plate efficiency are clear; the higher the degree of liquid channelling the lower the plate efficiency. However, own experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that plate efficiency never falls below the value of point efficiency. Therefore, liquid channelling only affects the crossflow on trays. Liquid channelling reduces the mass transfer performance to a similar extent as does the backmixing of liquid. Consequently, plate efficiency is not very sensitive to liquid channelling. Since the liquid is completely mixed in the downcomer, the effects of liquid channelling are restricted to a single tray. The behaviour of tray columns completely differs from that of packed columns, where the effects of liquid channelling are cumulative over the packed height. Consequently, trays represent a suitable design for columns of large diameters.

    Notes: Experimental investigations were carried out in spray scrubbers of different sizes with cocurrent flow of gas and liquid. Of special interest were the local processes in the mass transfer zone. The scrubber was operated with warm water/air system (cooling tower) to obtain detailed information about mass transfer. Air is being humidified with water vapour, which in turn leads to a temperature drop in the liquid. The liquid temperatures are relatively easy to measure and are shown as liquid isotherms. In the case of plug flow, the liquid isotherms should be straight horizontal lines. In reality, significant deviations from plug flow are caused by the transfer of liquid to the walls. A large part of the liquid forms a film flow at the wall. Furthermore, nearly all the mass transfer is completed in the zone of liquid atomization immediately beneath the nozzle. The number of measured transfer units was between 0.5 and 2.0 and was significantly influenced by the liquid flow rate. Based on the improved knowledge of the proceses inside the scrubber, a simplified model has been developed. Since the model simulates all the essential processes inside the mass transfer zone, liquid distribution and mass transfer efficiency can be approximately predicted.

    Notes: Distillation columns with multiple feeds are often used in processes for the separation of multicomponent mixtures. The minimum energy demand of such columns is determined via the minimum reflux and reboil, respectively.A novel method for directly calculating the minimum reflux ratio is presented in this paper. Applicable to ideal, nonideal and azeotropic mixtures the method is based merely on the knowledge of vapor-liquid equilibrium of the feed mixtures. This knowledge allows the determination of the internal concentration profile near the feed entry and, in turn, the calculation of both minimum reflux and optimal sequence of feeds. This sequence of feeds depends on feed compositions and product compositions, as well. Surprisingly, sometimes a multiple feed entry requires a higher energy demand than premixing the feed streams.

    Notes: Es wird über Untersuchungen zum Bodenwirkungsgrad berichtet, bei denen neben der Ermittlung der Konzentrationen der zu- und abströmenden Stoffströme der Temperaturverlauf der Flüssigkeit in der Sprudelschicht gemessen wurde. Durch diese zusätzliche Information ist es möglich, den Bodenwirkungsgrad in den Punktwirkungsgrad und die Flüssigkeitsvermischung zu zerlegen. Die Untersuchungen zeigen, daß der Grad der Flüssigkeitsvermischung wesentlich geringer ist, als allgemein angenommen wird, und daß der Flüssigkeitsdurchsatz über die Breite des Bodens in den meisten Fällen ungleichmäßig ist. Es wird ein Diagramm zur überschlägigen Ermittlung des Bodenwirkungsgrades angegeben.

    Notes: Separation of ternary mixtures by rectification. Ternary mixtures can be separated only to a limited extent by rectification. For example, it is common knowledge that only one pure substance can be separated from a ternary mixture in a single rectification step, and that this substance cannot be the one with the middle boiling point. However, this statement is correct only as long as „normal“ boiling behaviour is valid. If one or more azeotropes occur in a mixture then it is difficult to assess the possible separations. This paper presents a systematic method permitting quantitative predicition of possible separations even in very complex systems. The potential of this method for process development is demonstrated for the example of the separation of azeotropic mixtures with the aid of an auxiliary substance.
