    Notes: Abstract Chemical interactions at the phase boundaries of materials applied for the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) have been studied by EPMA. The chemical reactivity at the interface of Lay-xSrxMnO3/ZrO2-Y2O3 is dependent on the stoichiometry (y) and the Sr content (x) of the perovskite. Typical reaction products (zirconates) and a diffusion zone in the ZrO2–Y2O3 have been observed. The extension of cation release (Mn) is related to the increasing chemical activity of Mn oxide in the perovskite by the Sr substitution for La. The wettability of the metal/oxide interface in the anode cermet (Ni/ZrO2–Y2O3) has been found to be influenced by chemical reactions resulting from the applied reducing atmosphere with high carbon activity. The disintegration of ZrO2–Y2O3 in contact with molten Ni or Ni-Ti and Ni-Cr alloys leads to the redeposition of Y2O3-enriched oxides and also to Zr-rich intermetallic compounds and eutectics.

    Notes: Abstract LaMnO3-based perovskites are used as cathode materials in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). A major aspect for their applicability is their chemical inertness in connection with the electrolyte material YSZ (Zr0.85Y0.15O1.93) against zirconate formations. Perovskites with the composition Lay-x(Sr, Ca)xMn1-uCouO3 (y = 1.0 and 0.95; x = 0– 0.2 and 1; u = 0 and 0.2) were investigated with regard to their reactivity with YSZ at different reaction times and temperatures. Powder mixtures and double-layer reaction couples were used for the investigations. XRD phase analyses, SEM/EDX and EPMA were applied for the characterization of the annealed samples. La-deficient perovskites (y = 0.95) partially substituted by Sr and Ca improve the chemical compatibility of perovskite compositions towards YSZ. Sr-containing perovskites were found to have a higher reactivity than Ca perovskites for La2Zr2O7 formation. On the other hand enhanced Ca diffusion into YSZ was observed. Co substitution on Mn lattice sites decreased the chemical compatibility, especially for Sr containing perovskites.

    Notes: Abstract Chemically-homogeneous and well-characterized ceramic powders have been used for the preparation and investigation of the SOFC components. The powders were synthesized by spray drying and subsequent calcination. The resulting powders were characterized with regard to the crystalline phases, chemical analysis, specific surface area, particle size and particle size distribution, morphology and particle agglomerates. These parameters are very important for forming thin, flat ceramic sheets and components by tape-casting and screen-printing technology. Forming process, sintering, electrical conductivity and compatibility are discussed.
