    Notes: The production of an exceptionally abundant and stable intermetallic cluster Na6Pb has recently been reported. In an attempt to understand why this particular cluster appears so prominently in the experiments, we have performed ab initio total energy calculations on the clusters NanPb with n=3–8. The lowest energy structures and the evaporation energies for these clusters were determined. The energy to evaporate a Na atom from the octahedral cluster Na6Pb was found to be 1.58 eV, larger than that for bigger clusters. We propose that the high abundance of the Na6Pb cluster results from a cascade of evaporations from larger clusters which becomes blocked at Na6Pb because of the large evaporation energy. We also found that the cluster Na4Pb was particularly stable, and suggest how the relative stability of this cluster and Na6Pb might be related to the possible formation of complexes in Na–Pb liquid alloys. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Parental care of eggs by male upland bullies Gobiomorphus breviceps was studied in the field and in the laboratory, with special emphasis on the effect of infection by trematode cysts. In the field, the proportion of old eggs in the nest affected the time taken by males to return to their nest after being chased away, but only in one year of the study. No effects of male size, male parasite load, number of eggs per nest or nest characteristics were observed. In the laboratory, heavily-infected males spent more time fanning their eggs than lightly-infected ones. Smaller males also tended to spend more time fanning than large males. Male size, parasite load and number of eggs per nest had no measurable effect on the aggressiveness of guarding males towards intruders, weight loss in males or egg incubation time. Parental investments did not vary as a function of age of the eggs. All males cannibalized some of their eggs, and there appeared to be a threshold brood size below which males consumed their entire brood. Overall, results were not consistent with those of studies on other fish species, and indicate that rules of investment in parental care may be different for fish inhabiting harsh, unpredictable environments.

    Notes: Abstract— The characteristics of male upland bullies (Gobiomorphus breviceps) and their nest sites were examined in two New Zealand streams as possible determinants of male reproductive success. There was no association between male size, nest site characteristics (depth, distance to shore, river velocity, nest rock size), and male reproductive success. Similarly, the male's parasite load had no detectable influence on reproductive success. Multiple regression analysis revealed that no combination of factors could explain the wide variation in male reproductive success. It may be that the unpredictable nature of the stream habitats of bullies has favored reduced choosiness in females, which could lead to an absence of correlations between male and nest characteristics and reproductive success.

    Notes: Abstract The pseudopotential picture of the positron in a binary alloy is developed. It is shown that the positron is usually preferentially attracted to one sort of atom in the alloy.     Notes: Abstract A positron wave function incorporating the proper crystal symmetry is calculated for Al using the positron pseudopotential method. The positron ground state energy was also calculated and it was found to be in good agreement with the previous Wigner-Seitz calculations. The pseudopotential matrix elements are shown to be small and thus very accurate calculations can be performed using low order perturbation theory.

    Notes: Abstract A new model to explain the unexpectedly large heat transfer between liquid3He and sintered metal heat exchangers is described and evaluated. The heat transfer results from a direct coupling of3He quasiparticles in the pores to vibrational modes of the sintered metal powder. It is proposed that for a range of temperatures below 20 mK the dominant vibrational modes of the sinter are localized oscillations involving a few powder particles with frequencies distributed over a constant density of states. The3He is then treated as a Fermi gas in a set of boxes corresponding to the pores in the sinter. The vibrating or shaking boxes transfer energy to the3He quasiparticles inside the box. The calculated heat transfer between liquid3He and the vibrational modes of sintered metal heat exchangers isQ/(VΔT)∼4×10 −15 T/d 3 W m−3 K−1, where Q is the heat flow for a temperature differenceΔT, V is the volume of the sinter (metal and helium), andd is the powder particle diameter in meters; this has the observed linear temperature dependence, and in magnitude is larger than or comparable to published results from several laboratories. The heat transfer between the vibrational modes and the electron gas in the metal sinter that is needed to complete the heat path can also be described by the same model with the result that the electron-“phonon” coupling is significantly larger than the3He-“phonon” coupling. When the model is applied to heat transfer between liquid3He-4He mixtures and sinter the calculated results are again comparable to or larger than those measured. The postulated localized oscillator modes give a specific heat, linear in temperature, that is in reasonable agreement with measurements for pressed powder by Pohl and Tait.

    Notes: Ab initio density functional calculations for NanPb, LinPb, NanPb4, and LinPb4 are reported. The abundance of Na6Pb observed in gas-phase experiments is explained as a consequence of evaporative cooling, which stops at Na6Pb because of the high evaporation energy of this cluster. Insight is also provided into the clustering in the liquid Li-Pb and Na-Pb alloys. Anomalies in several electronic, structural, and thermodynamic properties were detected at certain compositions (20% Pb in Li-Pb; 20% Pb and 50% Pb in Na-Pb) and our calculations support the interpretation of those anomalies in terms of the formation of octet and Zintl clusters.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
