Notes: Abstract The hyperfine spectrum of 38−y 207Bi in the 6p 3 4 S 3/2−6p 2(3 P 0)7s 4 P 1/2 3,067-Å resonance line was measured by absorption spectroscopy. The207Bi−209Bi isotope shift is 0.0999(20) cm−1. The relative isotope shifts in bismuth are found to follow the general pattern of the even-neutron number isotopes for the isotones withZ=80, 81, 82 and 87. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hfs interaction constants for207Bi,A(4 P 1/2) =0.1630(3) cm−1 andB(4 S 3/2)=−0.016(3) cm−1, were obtained. Except for the isotope shift, these more precise values are in agreement with our previous results.

Notes: Abstract A cryostat has been designed for the refrigeration of a semiconductor diode laser (presently GaAs), using a flow of helium gas with controlled temperature. The possibility of independent adjustment of the injection current and of the temperature of the GaAs laser support allows cw emission over a wide wavelength range (∼100 Å for a given diode) while maintaining single-mode operation. A long-term frequency stability of ±30 MHz of the free-running single-mode laser has been obtained. By varying the dc injection current, it was possible to achieve linear scanning of the mode frequency, step by step or continuously, over at least 20 GHz without hopping. Possible applications in optical pumping and high-resolution spectroscopy are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] In 1903 Curie and Laborde5 used a calorimeter to verify that the heat produced by a radioactive substance results from the absorption of its energetic radiation. After this, microcalorimetry became of great theoretical importance through the determination6 of the 0.337-MeV average energy of 210Bi ...

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the heaviest known alkaline earth element radium (Z=88) have been studied in both the atomic Ra I and ionic Ra II spectra. The measurements, carried out by on-line collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy, yield the hyperfine constantsA andB of the 7s and 7p 1/2 states in Ra II, of all states of the excited 7s 7p configuration and the 7s 7d 3 D 3 state in Ra I. The data allow a consistent evaluation of the nuclear moments for eight odd-A radium isotopes. In particular, a complete analysis of the hyperfine structure of thesp configuration in the two-electron system provides a stringent test of the validity of the semi-empirical modified Breit-Wills theory. It is shown that the effective operator formalism is equivalent, if relativistic correction functions are used to reduce the number of parameters. The semi-empirical hyperfine fields are evaluated and found to agree generally with those from ab-initio calculations. The isotope shifts in thes−p,s 2−sp,sp−sd transitions are analysed semi-empirically and compared with ab-initio calculations. The consistency of the different analyses proves their validity and classifies the spectrum of Ra I as a model case for a simple and clean two-electron spectrum.

Notes: Abstract The hfs of205Pb in the 283.3-nm resonance line and its isotope shift (IS) have been measured in absorption with the use of dispersive spectroscopy. A new method for calibration and analysis, when internal standards are not available is described. The results are: hfs interaction constantsA=70.3(5)×10−3 cm−1,B=−0.6(1.1)×10−3 cm−1,205Pb-208Pb IS=−123.9(2.0)×10−3 cm−1. The derived nuclear magnetic dipole moment,μ=0.704(5)μ N is in good agreement with values calculated with a nuclear configuration mixing model.
