    Notes: Abstract Strata-bound antimony, mercury, tungsten and massive sulfide mineralization occurs within a metamorphosed Paleozoic volcanosedimentary sequence in the Kreuzeck Mountains, Austria. Amphibolites are a significant constituent of that sequence; on the basis of stable trace element data, they can be classified as metamorphic equivalents of recent olivine tholeiites. In the ore environment of strata-bound mineralization, intensive alteration associated with submarine hydrothermal activity has affected the wall rocks. This includes depletion in SiO2, a change in the oxidation stage of iron and pronounced enrichment in Na, Sr, Ba and CO2. Microprobe analyses reveal lower MgO content in chlorites and higher Na2O content in feldspars in rocks from the ore environment. Hydrothermal halos are thus documented by changes in mineral and whole-rock compositions and represent guides to exploration.

    Notes: Abstract The copper deposits of the O'okiep District rank amongst the top three S. African producers, with an annual output of 3 million metric tons grading 1.65% Cu on average. They occur in what is now considered the S. extension of the 1200 m. y. Kibaran orogenic belt. Copper mineralization is linked to cross-cutting bodies of "noritoid" RO=0.7126−0.7250) which have been emplaced into the granulite facies metamorphic country rocks 1100 m. y. ago. The results of 150 electron probe analyses show that orthopyroxene in the non-ore-bearing noritoids is En51–52, in the ore-bearing noritoids En60–65. There is a concomitant variation in the composition of phlogopitic mica which carries higher Fe in non-ore-bearing noritoids. The Ticontents of magnetite are below 0.1%; there are significant chromium values. Spinel exsolution lamellae contain up to 14% ZnO. The copper sulphides occur as granular aggregates with silicates, on grain boundaries and on cleavage planes of hypersthene and mica; they also replace altered Fe-Ti-oxides. Pyrite (up to 1.4% Co) and pentlandite (up to 5% Co) are not widespread. The possible derivation of the noritoids from a reservoir of basic magma at depth is considered. A source-bed model, involving generation of noritoid "magma" from Cu-bearing members of the stratigraphic sequence, during the peak of metamorphism (800–1000 °C, 6–8 kb) is tentatively proposed. Stratabound base metal concentrations (Aggeneys, Gamsberg) in lower grade (amphibolite facies) metamorphic terrains to the East have not been mobilized.

    Notes: Abstract The Ni-Co-Cu ores of Pevkos and Lakxia tou Mavrou, Limassol Forest, Cyprus, have been investigated microscopically and by electron microprobe analysis. At Pevkos, the mineral association consists of pyrrhotite, pentlandite, maucherite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, magnetite, chromite and valleriite with minor amounts of westerveldite, bornite, neodigenite, covellite and cobaltite. The mineralization at Lakxia tou Mavrou comprises pyrrhotite, pentlandite, löllingite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and chromite with traces of magnetite, pyrite, maucherite and valleriite. Paragenetic, compositional and textural features suggest a nonmagmatic origin for the sulfides and arsenides; they were deposited during serpentinization of the ultramafic host rocks. A conceptual model for mineralization linked to decreasing temperatures in a hydrothermal system is presented.

    Notes: Abstract Fluid inclusions in mineralized graphite-sillimanite-mica schist from the Rampura-Agucha Pb-Zn-(Ag) deposit, Rajasthan, northwest India, have been investigated by microthermometry and Raman microspectrometry. Three different main types of fluid inclusions in quartz can be distinguished: (1) gaseous (CO2, partially mixed with CH4-N2), (2) low salinity aqueous inclusions (0–8 eq. wt% NaCl) and (3) high salinity aqueous inclusions (NaCl ± MgCl2-CaCl2). Low density CO2-rich and low salinity H2O inclusions are contemporaneous and occur, together with CH4-N2 inclusions, in close association with sulfide mineral inclusions. This indicates immiscibility between the gaseous and aqueous phase and participation of these fluids during the deposition or remobilization of the ore, which occurred over a wide P (1220 to 200 bar) and T (450 to 250 °C). Raman spectra of graphite indicate upper greenschist-facies metamorphic conditions, although host rocks have been metamorphosed at upper amphibolite-facies metamorphic conditions. This indicates that graphite re-equilibrated with the CO2-rich phase during retrograde metamorphism.
