Notes: Nanoparticles (NPs) of biodegradable polymers as a drug delivery system formulate drugdevoid of harmful adjuvant, realize controlled drug release and achieve better therapeutic efficacy thanpristine agent. However, the low selectivity of NPs towards cancer cells hinders the advantages of NPformulation for efficient chemotherapy. The novel system of paclitaxel-loaded, trastuzumab-decoratedpoly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)/montmorillonite(PLGA/MMT) NPs for targeted drug delivery wasdeveloped. Paclitaxel was used as a prototype drug with excellent therapeutic effects against a widespectrum of cancers. Trastuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against the humanepidermal growth factor receptor-2(HER2), which overexpresses in 25-30% breast cancers. Moreover, synergistic effects have been found in combination of trastuzumab with paclitaxel. As a potentdetoxifier, the medical clay MMT can adsorb toxins and reduce side effects. The drug delivery systemrepresents a new concept in developing drug delivery systems and can achieve functions such as toformulate anticancer drugs with no harmful adjuvant; to reduce side effects caused by formulated drugs;to have synergistic therapeutic effects; and to achieve targeted chemotherapy for HER2-positive breastcancer

Notes: Synthesis of morph-genetic materials derived from biological structures by rapid, high temperature conversion represents a novel technology of advanced materials processing. The resulting morph-genetic materials exhibit unique macro- and microscopic cellular morphologies. In addition, based on the porous character of some natural plants, there is a further possibility of compounding the resulting morph-genetic materials with molten metal or polymer to produce morph-genetic composites with interpenetrating networks. Thus, the morph-genetic materials will be endowed with new use values, such as good mechanical properties, and friction behaviors, etc

Notes: Abstract Ca2+ influx is an important event associated with platelet activation and regulated by the content of intracellular Ca2+. Previous studies have suggested two different Ca2+ pools and two Ca2+ influx pathways exist in platelets. In the present study, we have investigated the regulation of thrombin- and thapsigargin-induced Ca2+ entry into human platelets, using fluorescent indicators to monitor Ca2+ mobilization and membrane potential. It was found that depletion of thapsigargin-sensitive Ca2+ stores was coupled to Ca2+ influx through a Ca2+-selective pathway. Additional release of Ca2+ from the thapsigargin-insensitive pool by thrombin caused the opening of a nonselective cation channel.

Notes: Morph-genetic synthesis, a preparation method using bio-structures as templates forfabricating micro-cellular materials, has attracted a considerable interest in recent years. In this report, we summarize our obtained results on synthesizing oxides and carbides based on wood templates (for TiC and SiC) and cotton templates (for Al2O3, SnO2 and SiC), respectively. The final products are observed to be faithfully retaining the micro-morphologies of their original natural counterparts, with the template bodies absolutely or partially replaced by the chemically synthesized compounds. These results suggest a new and handy way to fabricate materials withvarious microstructures, with deliberately choosing desired bio-structures from billions of different species as templates. Moreover, results on Al infiltrated wood templates, as a composite system, are also presented

Notes: In gas-liquid flows through tee junctions, because of the difference in inertia between the phases, the flowing mass fractions for an individual phase at the outlet sides differ from those at the inlet. This phase separation is an important consideration in delivering fluids and energy through pipe networks in the power and process industry. In this work, air-water and steam-water flows through branching and impacting tee junctions are considered. Under certain conditions (when the volumetric fraction of the liquid drops does not change appreciably and their bulk density is much higher than the gas density, and when the flow rates and/or the gas volumetric fraction are high), these flows can be approximated as irrotational flows of incompressible, inviscid fluids and are amenable to potential flow methods, for example, conformal mapping. For the general case of gas-liquid flows through a branching or impacting tee, a CFD code is utilized to conduct transient flow simulations. Predictions of phase separation for both types of tee junction agree well with experimental data.
