    Notes: Abstract Measurements were made of the time-averaged gamma ray energy loss spectrum in the energy range 360 keV to 7 MeV by the gamma ray detector on the OSO-7 satellite during the 3B flare on August 4, 1972. The differential photon spectrum unfolded from this spectrum after subtracting the background spectrum and contributions from gamma ray lines is best described by a power law with spectral index of 3.4±0.3 between 360–700 keV and by an exponential law of the form exp (-E/E 0) with E 0 = 1.0±0.1 MeV above 700 keV. It is suggested that this spectrum is due to nonthermal electron bremsstrahlung from a population of electrons, with a strong break in the spectrum at 2 MeV. Since the observational data indicates that the matter number density must be n H ⩾ 5 × 1010 cm-3 in the production region, the number of electrons above 100 keV required to explain the results is ⩽2 × 1034.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the effects on sucrose consumption of a dopamine (DA) D2/D3 antagonist (raclopride, 0–0.3 mg/kg), a serotonin 5-HT2/2c antagonist (ritanserin, 0–0.4 mg/kg), and raclopride (0.15 mg/kg) combined with ritanserin (0–0.4 mg/kg). Three different concentrations of sucrose solution (0.7%, 7.0% and 34%) were tested. The concentration-intake function in drug-free rats was an inverted-U, with 7.0% sucrose supporting the highest intake. Raclopride (0.3 mg/kg) inhibited intake of 7.0% sucrose, but its effect on 0.7% sucrose fell short of significance (P〈0.06) and intake of 34% sucrose was unchanged. Ritanserin did not affect sucrose intake when given on its own, but synergized with a previously ineffective dose of raclopride (0.15 mg/kg) so as to cause a significant inhibition of 7.0% sucrose intake and increase in 34% sucrose intake. These data indicate that 5-HT2 antagonism potentiated the behavioural effects of raclopride and we speculate that this interaction might contribute to the efficacy of atypical neuroleptic drugs.

    Notes: Abstract  Posterior fossa tension pneumocephalus (PFTP) is a very rare clinical entity – the few case reports available prove how rare. Five patients with PFTP are presented. All were operated on for posterior fossa lesions. One was operated on in the lateral position and the rest in a sitting position. All the patients had postoperative (early) neurological deterioration, and computed tomography (CT) scans revealed PFTP in the left cerebellopontine angle in one case and in the IV ventricle in the rest. Air was aspirated from the posterior fossa in one case. All the cases were electively ventilated for 48–72 h. All the patients had an immediate onset of progressive neurological recovery after early intervention and elective ventilation. One patient died 10 days later because of a recurrence of empyema and the development of meningitis. PFTP is a rare but important complication of posterior fossa surgery. Early intervention and elective ventilation can produce a good recovery.

    Notes: A group of antigens of 24-kD Mr from rat testes were characterised biochemically. These antigens were part of a larger molecule of ∼200 kD. On treatment with disulfide bond reducing agent, the 200-kD molecule was reduced to subunits. Immunoreactivity was confined to a doublet of ∼24 kD and a single band of ∼50 kD Mr after the reduction. Glycoprotein in nature, this antigen shared immunoreactive epitopes with a 40-kD antigen on human spermatozoa. Antiserum raised in rabbits against the 24-kD antigen from rat testes reacted with antigens on the acrosome of human spermatozoa. Agglutination of sperm could be induced by the antiserum. The carbohydrate residue could be removed by mannosidase digestion. Chemical deglycosylation studies showed a slight decrease in molecular weight. Immunoreactivity was however not completely lost after chemical deglycosylation. Isoelectric focusing of the antigen identified nine isoelectric species. Two relatively minor species showed immunoreactivity. Acrosome-reacted spermatozoa showed loss of antigens from acrosome.
