Notes: Studies on lattice change of a nickel-phosphorus amorphous alloy were carried out usingnot only high temperature X-ray diffraction but also extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS) analysis. Their thermal properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Since the results suggested that lattice relaxation occurred in the amorphous state byannealing, EXAFS measurements were carefully performed for characterizing the local structure ofthe amorphous alloys. The EXAFS analysis showed that the local structures around Ni atoms, which may be the Ni-Ni and Ni-P correlation, were changed by annealing. High temperature X-raydiffraction showed that small amount of crystal phase appeared by annealing up to 820 K, whileclear diffraction peaks of Ni3P were observed above 1100 K. These micro/nanoscale structuralchanges did not correspond to that obtained by DSC which showed an exothermic reaction ofatomistic reordering at 630 K. We need analysis of the nanostructures by small angle X-rayscattering or a high resolution transmission electron microscope

Notes: The microstructure of Fe-3 mass% Si alloys before secondary recrystallization has beencharacterized by analyzing precipitates and grain boundary segregated elements. The samples usedwere mainly sheets of Fe-3%Si alloys containing manganese, sulfur, aluminum, nitrogen and tin, which were decarburized and annealed up to secondary recrystallization. Grain boundary segregationin primarily recrystallized samples was studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), andprecipitates were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with an energy dispersiveX-ray spectrometer (EDX). AES spectra showed that tin and nitrogen were enriched on grainboundaries in the Fe-3 mass% Si alloys. TEM/EDX analysis showed that the morphology anddistribution of the fine precipitates such as manganese sulfide and aluminum nitride were influencedby addition of tin. The characteristic structure formed by secondary recrystallization of grain orientedsilicon steel is considered to be influenced by the fine precipitates and segregation of a small amountof elements, as the abnormal motion of grain boundaries of the silicon steel was correlated with theprecipitation and segregation of the alloying elements

Notes: The influence of addition of small amounts of boron and nitrogen on the microstructureformed by austenite decomposition in low-alloyed manganese steels was investigated. In order tounderstand microstructural changes by addition of boron and nitrogen, Auger electron spectroscopywas used for analyzing prior austenite grain boundaries in steels doped with phosphorus, boron andnitrogen. The results by microstructure observation showed that the formation of Widmanstättenferrite was suppressed by addition of a small amount of boron in the steels, whereas Widmanstättenferrite appears to be formed again by addition of boron and nitrogen. The Auger spectra showed thatsmall particles of boron nitride were detected on grain boundaries in steel doped with boron andnitrogen, while boron was segregated at grain boundaries in steel with boron. This indicates thatsegregation of boron at grain boundaries and/or sub-boundaries may suppress the formation ofWidmanstätten ferrite, while the formation of boron nitride seems to be ineffective to suppression ofthe formation of Widmanstätten ferrite in steels doped with boron and nitrogen

Notes: Solid particles of ferric oxyhydroxides or iron oxide were recrystallized from ferrous andferric ions dissolved in aqueous solution. There are different structures of α-FeOOH, β-FeOOH andγ-FeOOH in the ferric oxyhydroxides, of which the formation is influenced by reaction conditionssuch as oxidation rate of ferrous ions. In this work, a few factors affecting the formation of the ferricoxyhydroxides and iron oxides, which was converted from hydrosulfate green rust, has been studiedusing different methods. The hydrosulfate green rust (GR2) was synthesized from solutions of ferricsulfate (Fe2(SO4)3), ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and they were oxidizedby gas containing oxygen. X-ray diffraction measurements and X-ray absorption spectroscopy wereused for analyzing the structure and chemical state of solid particles extracted from the suspensionduring the oxidation. The morphology of the particles was observed by transmission electronmicroscopy. The results showed that γ-FeOOH or Fe3O4 particles were formed together withα-FeOOH particles during conversion from the green rust, depending on oxidation temperature, oxygen flow rate and addition of manganese. This indicates that the species of ferric oxyhydroxidesor iron oxides formed in aqueous solution is sensitively influenced by reaction conditions

Notes: Abstract A saline-jet aspiration thrombectomy (JAT) catheter was used in a patient with acute myocardial infarction. A right coronary arteriogram showed complete thrombotic occlusion at the proximal segment. With this catheter the thrombus was removed without complications in 5 sec. The patient underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and placement of a Palmaz-Schatz stent after successful thrombectomy. Thrombectomy with a JAT catheter was very useful in this patient.

Notes: Summary From October 1983 to September 1985, 84 patients with superficial bladder tumor (Ta, Tl, Tis) were treated with sequential instillation of mitomycin C (MMC) and adriamycin (ADM). Doses of 20 mg MMC on day 1 and 40 mg ADM on day 2 were instilled into the bladder and retained for at least 2 h; this was repeated once a week for 5 consecutive weeks. Patients who achieved complete response (CR), were randomized and underwent prophylactic treatment taking the form of either intermittent instillation of MMC or daily oral administration of 5-fluorouracil. Of 79 evaluable patients, 72 (91%) had received prior treatment for superficial bladder tumors, 69 (87%) had high-grade tumors, and 18 (23%) had non-papillary Tis. The overall response rate was 68%, made up of CR in 43 patients (54%) and partial response (PR) in 11 (14%). Patients with either five or more tumors or tumors larger than 1 cm showed a significantly lower response rate than those with fewer than five tumors and tumors smaller than 1 cm, respectively. There was no correlation between tumor growth pattern, tumor grade and response rate, though non-papillary Tis appeared to respond better than papillary tumors. A history of prior instillation therapy or of toxicity to this treatment had no significant influence on the response rate. Although no systemic toxicity was observed, 62 patients (74%) experienced cystitis and the treatment had to be discontinued within 4 weeks in 13 of 33 cases with severe symptoms. The preliminary conclusion of prophylactic treatment was that intermittent instillation of MMC was superior to 5-FU medication in reducing the recurrence rate for at least 2 years after the treatment.

Notes: Abstract  Equivalent discharge conditions, where the intensities of the analyte are almost the same between the d.c. and the r.f. power modes, have been investigated in Grimm glow discharge emission spectrometry. The two plasmas have similar emission and sputtering characteristics, enabling the conditions to be found easily. Various emission lines of argon ion are commonly observed from the argon discharges regardless of the power modes. A method to determine the equivalent discharge conditions is suggested, based on intensity analysis of the argon ionic lines.

Notes: We fabricated a small α-TCP ceramic unit having four pods, named “Tetra-bone”employing a ceramic injection molding. Tetra-bone can keep uniform concave geometry among thepods as well as immobilizing each other. Owing to the monotony of Tetra-bone, weight of Tetrabonesused can be converted into the number of Tetra-bones, volume that can be filled with Tetrabones, and the number of functional structures. By using Tetra-bones, bone defects can be filledwith intentional geometry that helps to discuss the relation between geometric features of pores andbone formation
