Notizen: The purpose of this comparative study was to record the prevalence and to estimate the incidence of self-reported hand dermatosis in a cohort of upper secondary school pupils on two different occasions, in 1995 and 1997. A previously validated questionnaire was used. Of the 1273 pupils invited to participate, 1136 (89·2%) responded to the questionnaire. The 1-year prevalence increased, although not significantly, from 9·6% in 1995 to 10·5% in 1997. For girls, the 1-year prevalence increased significantly, from 12·4% to 15·7%, while for boys the 1-year prevalence decreased, but not significantly, from 6·7% to 5·1%. The cumulative incidence was significantly higher (P 〈 0·001) among the girls (10·5%) than among the boys (2·8%). Multiple logistic regressions showed that the highest risk factors for 1-year prevalence in 1995 were having self-reported childhood eczema, and a family history of atopic eczema or asthma. In 1997, the highest risk factors were self-reported childhood eczema, female gender and a family history of atopic eczema. This study has identified the point at which the genders diverge with regard to hand dermatosis, with boys tending to recover, while girls show a steady or even increasing prevalence.

Notizen: Cowden's disease is so often followed by malignant diseases, such as cancer of the breast and thyroid, and different forms of gynaecological cancer, that surgeons should be made especially aware of those changes in skin and mucous membranes which, if multiple are pathognomic. It remains, however, an underdiagnosed syndrome. We believe a number of other conditions are also associated with Cowden's disease.

Notizen: A summary description of the equipment for time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectroscopy and its uses in the x-ray region for the study of radiation damage (photofragmentation) of biologically relevant molecules is given. The technique is illustrated with some recent x-ray (∼8.1 keV) TOF results obtained from free adenosine triphosphate and guanine molecules. The well defined time structure of synchrotron radiation has been employed in order to record the molecular decomposition in real time. It has, thereby, been possible to determine which bonds are most susceptible to bond breakage following irradiation of the molecules by x rays.

Notizen: The dust mite Lepidoglyphus destructor is the dominating source of allergens giving rise to asthma and rhinitis among farmers. In a previous study of the localization of allergens in L. destructor we demonstrated that the 39 kDa allergen is associated with digestion. Here we describe the localization of the principal 15 kDa allergen and the high molecular weight allergen complex (79 and 93 kDa) in L. destructor with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Cryostat-cut sections of mite bodies and faecal pellets were probed with mouse monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) raised against the allergens. The 15 kDa allergen disclosed labelling of the mite body and most of the faecal pellets but left the exoskeleton unlabelled. The binding was widespread, and most intense in the mouth region. However, some staining was also observed around the gastrointestinal tract. In contrast, the 79 and 93 kDa allergen complex stained the exoskeleton and the front part of the mile. Interestingly, we detected no labelling of the faecal pellets with the MOAb against the 79/93 kDa allergen. The study indicates that the 15 kDa allergen is associated with the digestive tract whereas the function of the 79 and 93 kDa allergen complex remains to be elucidated.

Notizen: From 1985 10 1989, 13 cases of contact allergy 10 olive oil have been identified in the Departments of Dermatology of Kristianstad and östersund Hospitals. Known components of olive oil could not be proved to be the cause of the allergy. This high number of patients with contact allergy to olive oil and possible explanations are discussed.

Notizen: Objective:  A possible contact allergy to herbal teas, in particular those derived from the Asteraceae plant family, was investigated in patients allergic to sesquiterpene lactones (SL).Method:  Twenty patients with a contact allergy to SL were recalled and patch-tested with aqueous, ethanol and acetone extracts of 8 different herbal teas based on Asteraceae plants as well as with parthenolide and other SL.Results:  In 18/20 patients with SL allergy there were positive test reactions to the Asteraceae teas, mainly to those based on German chamomile, dandelion and milfoil. Among the SL, parthenolide was the most frequent co-reactor.Conclusion:  Most patients with a contact allergy to SL are allergic to commercial teas derived from the Asteraceae plant family as well.

Notizen: Occupational skin diseases are among the most frequent work-related diseases in industrialized countries. Good occupational skin disease statistics exist in few countries. Questionnaire studies are needed to get more data on the epidemiology of occupational skin diseases. The Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire Group has developed a new questionnaire tool – Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire (NOSQ-2002) – for surveys on work-related skin disease and exposures to environmental factors. The 2 NOSQ-2002 questionnaires have been compiled by using existing questionnaires and experience. NOSQ-2002/SHORT is a ready-to-use 4-page questionnaire for screening and monitoring occupational skin diseases, e.g. in a population or workplace. All the questions in the short questionnaire (NOSQ-2002/SHORT) are included in the long version, NOSQ-2002/LONG, which contains a pool of questions to be chosen according to research needs and tailored to specific populations. The NOSQ-2002 report includes, in addition to the questionnaires, a comprehensive manual for researchers on planning and conducting a questionnaire survey on hand eczema and relevant exposures. NOSQ-2002 questionnaires have been compiled in English and translated into Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic. The use of NOSQ-2002 will benefit research on occupational skin diseases by providing more standardized data, which can be compared between studies and countries.

Notizen: Aim:  To investigate the risk of adult hand eczema and possible influence on later working life in persons with childhood atopic dermatitis.Method:  After reviewing medical records from the school healthcare in Stockholm regarding individuals born 1960–69, 600 individuals where signs of atopic dermatitis were noted (“cases”) and 600 matched controls without eczema or allergic disease (“controls”) were identified. 405 cases and 378 controls answered a questionnaire regarding past and present skin disease, choice of job, exposure at work and possible change of job due to eczema. Results: Hand eczema was more than 3 times more common among cases, 42%, compared to controls, 13%(p 〈 0.001). Hand eczema during the past 12 months was reported by 24% of the cases and 9% of the controls (p 〈 0.001). The proportion of individuals working in jobs with high-risk for hand eczema was equal between the groups, as well as exposure to water, detergents, chemicals and hand washing. Among the cases 9% reported change of job due to eczema compared to 2% of controls (p 〈 0.001) and sick leave 10% compared to 2%(p 〈 0.001).Conclusions: Childhood atopic dermatitis is a risk factor for hand eczema. As the proportion of individuals in jobs with high-risk for hand eczema and the exposure was the same in cases and controls measures preventive measures are important to reduce consequences like sick leave and change of job.
