Notes: We compare quantum interference devices, exemplified by a resonant tunnel transistor, an Aharonov–Bohm interferometer, and a Y-branch switch, to field-effect transistors regarding their capability to reach fundamentally limited switch energies as well as their normalized transconductance. The resonant tunnel transistor is found to behave similarly to the field-effect transistor (FET). The Aharonov–Bohm interferometer is essentially equivalent to a single-mode Y-branch switch, while the Y branch has an advantage in allowing multimode operation. The normalized transconductance of these two devices can be an order of magnitude larger than for a FET.

Notes: The accessibility of the nasal airway allows important examination of the airway mucosa in health and disease. However, the current methods for nasal challenge and lavage in children suffer from several shortcomings. In the present study, we have assessed the utility of a recently developed “nasal pool”-device in 7–9 year old children, and explored the ability of the nasal mucosa of these school-children to mount a plasma exudation res-ponse (lumenal entry of bulk plasma). Isotonic saline was instilled and maintained (1 min) as a “pool” in the unilateral nasal cavity. Recovery of the “pool” (lavage fluids) was determined. Concomitant challenge and lavage was then performed by exposing the nasal mucosa to a “pool” of iso-tonic saline and histamine (40-400 μg/ml) for 2 min. “Pool” fluids were analysed for α2-macroglobulin as an index of microvascular epithelial exudation of bulk plasma. The school-children successfully managed to carry out nasal lavages as well as concomitant histamine challenges and lavages with the “nasal pool”-device. The recovery of the nasal lavage fluids was almost quantitative (〉85%) and thus well reproducible. Histamine produced significant exudation of bulk plasma (α2-macroglobulin), We suggest that the “nasal pool”-device is well suited for challenge and lavage of the nasal airway mucosa in children above 6 years of age. and conclude that lumenal entry of multipotent humoural protein-systems may be an im-portant first line respiratory defence mechanism in children.

Notes: Background: In view of recent observations demonstrating that rhinovirus infections are associated with increased local activity of eosinophils, we hypothesized that eotaxin, a selective eosinophil chemoattractant, may be involved in eosinophil recruitment/activation in common cold infections. Methods: Twenty-three patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis were inoculated with human rhinovirus 16 (HRV 16) outside the pollen season. Sequential diluent and allergen (103 SQ-U) challenges, each followed by nasal lavage, were carried out about 3 months before and 4 days after virus inoculation. Results: Seventeen patients developed common cold and were further analyzed. Lavage fluid levels of eotaxin were increased at the height of active common cold (day 4 after inoculation) both at baseline (after diluent challenge) (P〈0.01) and acutely after allergen challenge (P〈0.05). Conclusions: Common cold symptoms after nasal HRV 16 inoculation are associated with increased nasal mucosal output of eotaxin, suggesting that this chemokine is partly responsible for recruitment/activation of airway mucosal eosinophils in common cold infections.

Notes: Abstract The architectures, implementation and applications of two smart sensors, LAPP and PASIC, are described. The basic idea of these two designs is to integrate an image sensor array with a digital processor array in a single chip. The integrated camera-and-processor eliminates the bottleneck of sequential image read-out that characterizes conventional systems. They provide fast, compact and economic solutions for tasks such as industrial inspection, optical character recognition and robot vision.

Notes: The modulated structure of Ag2SnO3, disilver tin trioxide, was investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction along four different directions. Electron diffraction showed an incommensurate one-dimensional modulated structure with a modulation wavevector of 1/6.4a*. High-resolution images showed a large number of superstructure domains with the size range 10–100 nm and orientations related by hexagonal rotation. The modulation was determined to be displacements along the c axis of the Ag atoms both in octahedral and linear coordination. An approximate structure model with a commensurate sixfold superstructure, with an orthorhombic cell (P212121, a = 2.922, b = 1.267, c = 0.562 nm), is proposed. Calculated images and electron diffraction patterns, based on this model, agree well with experimental observations.

Notes: Summary A case-referent study on the possible association between radon emanating from the ground and bronchial cancer was carried out on 292 female lung cancer cases and 584 matched population referents. Both groups had lived for at least 30 years in the city of Stockholm, Sweden. The cases were diagnosed during 1972 to 1980 with oat-cell and other types of anaplastic pulmonary carcinomas. A sample of about 10% of the dwellings where cases and referents had lived was selected for measurements of radon and radon daughters. There was a relative risk of 2.2 (P = 0.01) for lung cancer associated with living in dwellings close to the ground in areas with an increased risk of radon emanation. Smoking habits did not appear to be a major confounding factor for this association, although a detailed evaluation was not possible. The measurements indicated increased radon daughter concentrations in ground level dwellings within radon risk areas where lung cancer cases had lived, suggesting that this exposure was of etiologic importance.

Notes: Abstract Fifty consecutive patients with anal canal epidermoid carcinoma were evaluated by transanorectal ultrasonography (TRUS) at diagnosis. Forty-six patients were treated with primary radiotherapy plus bleomycin. Twenty-eight of the last 30 patients underwent, in addition, planimetric volume determination. The ultrasound findings were compared with clinical stage as assessed by digital palpation. Tumours in clinical stages T1–2 showed evidence of penetration through the anorectal muscular wall at ultrasound (UT3–4) in two-thirds of the cases. This was the case in all tumours in clinical stages T3–4. A clear correlation between tumour size, depth of invasion, and tumour volume, respectively, and residual tumour after a “pre-operative” dose of 40 Gy plus bleomycin was found. When combining clinical stage with TRUS, all tumours classified as T1–2/UT1–2 and had a complete response (CR) after the first radiotherapy period, whereas the corresponding figures for those with deep invasion ultrasonographically (T1–2/UT3–4 and T3–4/UT3–4) were 64 percent and 0 percent, respectively. It thus appears that TRUS could complement digital palpation in staging anal canal carcinoma.

Notes: Abstract We have constructed an addressable 256 × 256 photodiode sensor array together with an 8-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) on the same chip. Such a digital camera is easy to connect to a computer where also the flexibility of the computer can be used to control the camera output. The sensor has been constructed in two versions. The first version was implemented with a 256-column parallel-bit-slice image processor on the same die in a commercial project and the second as a separate addressable digital image sensor. The sensor was functionally fabricated using 1.6 µm design rules in a 1.2 µm CMOS process where it required a total area of 96 mm2.
