Notes: Abstract  This is a whole head magnetoencephalographic (MEG) study of the neural processing of briefly presented images of human faces in 14 normal subjects. The experiments involved three tasks of increasing complexity, involving image categorisation, image comparison and the identification of emotion. The analyses were based on average responses to repeated stimuli in the different image categories. These averages were processed to give numerical measures of the power within defined regions and latency spans. The only statistically significant difference in these data between the response to faces and other images is in the right occipito-temporal channels at a latency of 140 ms. The face-specific response is largely independent of the task. Source modelling suggests an extended source in the ventral occipito-temporal region. The analysis supports the notions of both face-specificity and right hemisphere dominance for all image types at early latencies.

Notes: Summary Investigations of the magnetic field around the human leg using a SQUID magnetometer yield consistent, reproducible results which can be modelled by 2 oppositely oriented line currents parallel to the leg axis. The fields are affected by muscle activity, decaying with the time of relaxation of the leg.

Notes: The magnetic flux threading a general pickup coil system is expressed as a power series expansion in which the source and detector dependencies are separated. Specific expressions are developed for the commonest coil system—a single circular coil. For a given configuration, the maximum error is simply related to the number of terms retained in the expansion. Actual computations show that, for a single circular coil, and for configurations typically encountered in biomagnetic studies, the power series expansion method is about 20 times faster than direct integration of the vector potential over the coil perimeter.

Notes: Summary The ionic currents flowing in developing organisms produce weak magnetic fields that can be detected using SQUID magnetometers. The method is non-invasive and dc recording is possible. To date SQUID magnetometers have mainly been used in human studies. The features of the technique are described and the prospects of extending its use to developmental studies are discussed. Feasible instrumental specifications are indicated. A recent SQUID magnetometer investigation of ionic current flow in the developing chick in ovo is summarised as an illustration of the magnetometer method. The paper as a whole argues that magnetometry is a useful alternative or adjunct to electrode-based experiments on the electrophysiology of developing organisms.

Notes: NMR and compressional cooling experiments have been carried out in Vycor porous glass immersed in liquid 3He in a Pomeranchuk cell at various temperatures and pressures. The expected nucleation of a solid phase near the substrate at a few bar does not take place, but compressional cooling occurs at about 2/3 bar below the melting curve. Modification of a simple statistical layer model to take into account the two-dimensional nature of the second layer gives better agreement with the observations, but other considerations show that the phase is probably fluid. These experiments therefore show the existence of a previously undiscovered high-density (〉solid) disordered phase which is probably mobile. The NMR measurements show that the ferromagnetic interactions in the adsorbed 3He are larger than in bulk liquid, and increase with increasing pressure and decreasing temperature.

Notes: Abstract The growth of R2GeMoO8 and R2GeWO8 crystals from the flux systems R2O3-GeO2-MO3-PbO, where M = Mo or W, is described. A preliminary investigation of their magnetic properties is reported. The X-ray powder pattern data for R2GeWO8 with R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er are given.
