Notes: The recording characteristics of Co-γFe2O3 perpendicular magnetic recording hard disk media were investigated. Sliding contact recording was performed to evaluate the intrinsic high-density recording performance of the media with using a metal-in-gap-type ring head. The half-voltage density D50 of 176 kFRPI and low-density reproduced voltage Ep of 143 nVp-p/[turn μm (m/s)] were obtained for the optimal medium whose Co-γFe2O3 layer thickness was 0.13 μm and perpendicular coercivity was 1800 Oe. The pass wear durability test was performed at 2 m/s, or at a disk rotation of 830 rpm. The reproduced voltage did not decrease with time, and scratches and damage were not observed on the tested track even after 18 000 000 passes. The Co-γFe2O3 medium is one of the candidates for ultrahigh-density recording media because of its specific advantages; superior high density recording performance and hardness tolerable for sliding contact use. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The NiO underlayer, which had 〈100〉 orientation, with NaCl-like structure could be prepared onto the glass substrate by reactive rf sputtering at ambient temperature. The CoO/Fe3O4 multilayers were grown epitaxially on the underlayer at 200 °C; the Fe3O4 and CoO on the NiO grew along the 〈100〉 axis independent of the bilayer thickness Λ, though those on the glass substrate did not show the 〈100〉 orientation for Λ(approximately-greater-than)100 A(ring). Followed by annealing of the multilayers in air at 280–350 °C, the 〈100〉-oriented Co-γ-Fe2O3 perpendicular magnetic films were obtained. The (400) of the Co-γ-Fe2O3 on the (200) of the NiO has tensile stress at the interface because of the smaller (400) spacing than the (200) spacing normal to the film plane. Therefore, the (400) spacing measured parallel to the film plane (2.072 A(ring)) was smaller than that of bulk, 2.086 A(ring). The magnetic properties of the Co-γ-Fe2O3 films on the NiO, Co-γ-Fe2O3/NiO, obtained above were evaluated. The squareness compensated by a demagnetization coefficient of Co-γ-Fe2O3/NiO were more than 0.94, though those of the Co-γ-Fe2O3 on the glass substrate, Co-γ-Fe2O3/glass, were about 0.85. The anisotropy energy of Co-γ-Fe2O3/NiO was estimated 3.3×106 ergs/cm3, which value was larger than that of Co-γ-Fe2O3/glass (2.5×106 ergs/cm3). Coercivity of the perpendicular hysteresis loop of Co-γ-Fe2O3/NiO increased with Co contents and could be controlled in the region of 0.8–5.0 kOe, although Hc of Co-γ-Fe2O3/glass were 5.0 kOe constantly. The columnar grains of the Co-γ-Fe2O3, whose diameter is 300–500 A(ring), grew continuously along the columnar grains of NiO. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Under acute conditions, maxillofacial injuries may be treated without the opportunity for an assessment of occlusal irregularities, even when there are mandibular fractures, because life-threatening injuries have priority over occlusion. Consequently, mandibular fractures may result in post-trauma malocclusion and facial deformity. The case history reported is of amale patient who had been involved in a traffic accident in childhood and suffered mandibular fractures. The initial incomplete man- agement resulted in persistent deformation of the mandible, disturbance of dental occlusion and difficulty in mastication. These irregularities were corrected during childhood by non-operative orthodontic treatment. When the patient reached adulthood, some permanent teeth were malformed because the fractures had damaged some tooth germs. However, the permanent dentition in general was almost normal as a result of the corrected primary dentition. Although the alveolar deformity due to the injury remained, the mandibular base was satisfactorily remodelled. The case reported supports the view that early restoration of normal dental occlusion before the eruption of permanent teeth contributes to the establishment of good functional dental occlusion of the permanent teeth.

Notes: Microstructure and temperature dependence of magnetic properties of Co-CoO films are studied. Columnar microstructure with chains of Co fine particles surrounded by CoO fine particles develops perpendicular to the film plane. Perpendicular anisotropy energy Ku takes a maximum value when the columnar diameter is minimum whose typical value is 1/20 of the film thickness. Change of magnetic domain structure with increasing Ku is studied. The perpendicular magnetization is restricted to the heterogeneous columnar microstructure. The perpendicular coercivity Hc decreases steeply with increasing temperature, that is associated probably with antiferromagnetic nature of CoO. Hc at room temperature increases after an annealing at 400–500 K.

Notes: Co-γFe2O3 films have been prepared by annealing Fe3O4/CoO multilayers. The crystalline orientation of multilayers change with bilayer thickness Λ; the [100] axis of Fe3O4 and CoO orients perpendicular to the film plane for Λ〈80 A(ring) and the [111] axis orients for Λ(approximately-greater-than)100 A(ring). The Co-γFe2O3 films obtained from multilayers of Λ〈80 A(ring) have positive perpendicular anisotropy. The magnetic coercivity and the squareness of perpendicular hysteresis curves are about 5.0 kOe and 0.8, respectively. The films show high magneto-optical effects and the figure of merit is 5.5 deg, which is about three times larger than that of CoFe2O4.
