Notes: Abstract Three hundred and forty-seven subjects at risk for herpes genitalis were vaccinated with Skinner vaccine, NFUAc.HSV1.(S−MRC 5), and were followed for an average duration of 2 years representing a total consortship of 664.4 years. Based on survey information obtained during this consortship, there were estimated to be 3076 recurrences which summated to 3.5 years total duration of disease and comprised at least 6794 lesions; there were an estimated 51997 episodes of intercourse including at least 241 episodes of unprotected intercourse in the presence of herpetic lesions. The rate of contraction of herpes genitalis was 6 of 54 consorts (11.1%) who received one vaccination and 7 of 293 (2.4%) who received two, three of four vaccinations. There was no evidence of physical or psychological side effects from vaccination.

Notes: [Auszug] In applying interferometry to the alinement of co-axial optical systems, the spatial distribution of non-localized interference patterns is utilized. Thus the necessity of image location is eliminated and a technique combining the advantages of aperture sight and image alinement methods is ...

Notes: Nitrogen uptake can be modified by both frequency of defoliation and competing neighbour plants. The objective of this study was to investigate nitrogen uptake by Lolium perenne and Festuca rubra subject to weekly or monthly defoliation with five neighbours: either none, L perenne clipped weekly, L. perenne clipped monthly, F. rubra clipped weekly or F. rubra clipped monthly. Plants were grown in sand culture with nutrients supplied as solutions. Nitrogen uptake over a I-week period commencing at the time of a defoliation event was estimated using l5N as a tracer. L. perenne had greater dry weight and nitrogen uptake than F. rubra. Neighbours reduced nitrogen uptake per plant. When neighbours were present, clipping them more frequently resulted in greater uptake by sample plants. Over 57% of total plant uptake was partitioned towards the two youngest leaves. In mixtures of L. perenne with F. rubra, the percentages of the total pot dry weight and N content recovered in sample L. perenne plants increased when they were clipped less frequently, compared with when the accompanying F. rubra plants were clipped less frequently.

Notes: A new inversion method for seismic reflection data is based on impedance concepts and uses transformations to reduce the essentially non-linear problem to a linear eigenvalue formulation without approximation. A set of reflection data has been inverted using this method. The characteristic impedances of the layers so determined are compared with log data from a reference borehole.

Notes: Reduced inputs of fertilizer and lime to grasslands can result in decreased soil pH, increased aluminium concentration in the soil solution and, consequent upon these, inhinition of nitrogen acquisition by plannts. This study tested the hypothesis that under conditions of low pH and high aluminium concentrations a grass species more tolerant of acid conditions (Deschampsia flexuosa) maintains a greater total supply of nitrogen to growing leaves after defoliation from both root uptake and mobilization of stores than a less tolerant species (Lolium perenne). The grasses were grown without alumimium at pH values 3.5, 4.0, 5.0 or 5.5 and at a range of aluminium concentrations (0, 20, 100, 200 or 1000 mmol m−3) at pH 4.5. Labelling with 15NH415NO3 after defoliation allowed estimation of both root uptake and mobilization of stores in supplying nitrogen to growing leaves. The total amount of nitrogen supplied to the growing the leaves after defoliation by the combination of current root uptake and mobilization was maximal when aluminium was in the range 20–20 mmol m-3. The total nitrogen supplied to growing leaves the both species after defoliation was greater when the grasses were grwon at pH 5.0 and 5.5 than when grown at pH 4.0. L. perenned and D. flexuosa were affected similarly by both aluminium and pH with respect to the total nitrogen supplied to the leaves. The effects of aluminium an dpH upon the supply of nitrogen to growing leaves after defoliation my not be a dominant factor in the vegetation dynamics of grazed swards.
