Notes: Factors associated with low-back pain were sought by examining physical activity, low-back pain reports and physical measurements in 86 athletes and 33 nonathletes, a total of 119 adolescents (52 boys and 67 girls). The athletic boys participated in team sports (19 in soccer and 17 in ice hockey) and the athletic girls in individual sports or dance (14 in gymnastics, 17 in figure skating, and 19 in ballet). All subjects answered a questionnaire on physical activity and pain history at the beginning of the study and at the 1-year follow-up. At the beginning of the study, the subjects also participated in quantitative measurements of anthropometry, flexibility (joint hypermobility and muscular tightness), and strength. In multivariate analysis, decreased lumbar flexion and hip flexor tightness at the baseline were predictive of low-back pain among boys during the follow-up. Among girls higher than average body weight at the baseline and low-back pain during the 12 months preceding the baseline measurements were predictive of low-back pain during the follow-up. However, the differences between the groups with and without low-back pain were small compared with the differences between different physical activity groups. In conclusion, attention should be focused on low-back pain, which accumulates in adolescent athletes participating in individual sports, such as figure skating and gymnastics. Our results suggest that flexibility and strength measurements are weak predictors in determining athletes at high risk.

Notes: Previous studies have reported increasing trends in physical activity in the Finnish population. These reports have not, however, included the perspective of cardiorespiratory stress in adolecent and young adults. We examined the present patterns of physical activity among Finnish adolescents and young adults in 1992. We specifically assessed whether the young people experience the volume of physical activity that is believed to stress the cardiorespiratory system appropriately in order to increase the level of fitness. The subjects in the present study were participants of a large multicenter study of atherosclerosis precursors in children and young adults. Physical activity was measured with a self-administered questionnaire in 2255 adolescents and young adults (1015 males and 1240 females). The proportion of subjects undertaking the volume of physical activity believed to benefit the cardiorespiratory system appropriately was 19%. The proportion was higher in males than in females (26 vs. 13%). The proportion of active subjects became smaller in older age groups in both sexes. Half the study population (51% of the males; 48%) of the females) reported frequent leisure-time physical activity less than once a month. In conclusion, Finnish adolescents and young adults have low levels of physical activity on the average, and many young Finns seldom undertake the volume of physical activity believed to benefit the cardiopulmonary system. Young males seem to be physically more active than females.

Notes: Abstract Five cases of stress fracture of the patella in athletes are presented. Four of these occurred transversally in the lower part and one longitudinally in the lateral part of the patella. Three of the patients were females (endurance runner, high jumper, and orienteerer) and two males (volleyball and soccer player). The diagnosis was made 2–8 months from the onset of the symptoms. Conservative treatment was successful in only one patient; all others were treated surgically, with good end result. Drilling of the fracture line was performed twice with metal wire cerclage fixation, excision of the lateral fragment was carried out once, and a bone graft with K wires and cerclage compression (tension band) was performed once. In all cases the patellar retinaculum was intact, indicating a stress injury. Stress fracture of the patella is a rare overuse injury, and therefore difficulties and delays in the diagnosis and treatment may occur. In cases with delayed diagnosis we recommend operative treatment.

On a noté l'existence d'antécédents traumatiques ostéoarticulaires.
Notes: Summary Reaction time, choice reaction time and mental ability were measured in a sample of 123 young men. Previous musculoskeletal injuries were noted. Eight subjects who had experienced a bone fracture in the preceding 20 months had significantly longer choice reaction time and poorer mental ability test results than the non-injured. This preliminary result shows that long choice reaction time and poor performance on mental ability tests are associated with accidental musculoskeletal injuries.
