Notes: The self-consistent field method for molecular interaction (SCF MI) by Gianinetti, Raimondi, and Tornaghi is extended to multi-component systems. A set of equations are written with projection operators, and the accurate approximate equations are derived. The method is applied to water clusters and to a fluoride anion complex with a water dimer. The calculated interaction energies are compared with those estimated with the counterpoise method, and they converge to smaller values for extensive basis sets. The underestimation of the binding energy results from the omission of the most part of charge transfer contribution in the wave function. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Mesozoic accretionary complexes of the southern Chichibu and the northern Shimanto Belts, widely exposed in the Kanto Mountains, consist of 15 tectonostratigraphic units according to radiolarian biochronologic data. The units show a zonal arrangement of imbricate structure and the age of the terrigenous clastics of each unit indicates successive and systematic southwestward younging. Although rocks in these complexes range in age from Carboniferous to Cretaceous, the trench-fill deposits corresponding to the Hauterivian, the Aptian to Middle Albian and the Turonian are missing. A close relationship between the missing accretionary complexes and the development of strike-slip basins is recognizable. The tectonic nature of the continental margin might have resulted from a change from a convergent into a transform or oblique-slip condition, so that strike-slip basins were formed along the mobile zones on the ancient accretionary complexes. Most terrigenous materials were probably trapped by the strike-slip basins. Then, the accretion of the clastic rock sequence occurred, probably as a result of the small supply of terrigenous materials in the trench. However, in the case of right-angle subduction, terrigenous materials might have been transported to the trench through submarine canyons and deposited there. Thus, the accretionary complexes grew rapidly and thickened. Changes both in oceanic plate motion and in the fluctuation of terrigenous supply due to the sedimentary trap caused pulses of accretionary complex growth during Jurassic and Cretaceous times. In the Kanto Mountains, three tectonic phases are recognized, reflecting the changes of the consuming direction of the oceanic plates along the eastern margin of the Asian continent. These are the Early Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous right-angle subduction of the Izanagi Plate, the Early to early Late Cretaceous strike-slip movement of the Izanagi and Kula Plates, and the late Late Cretaceous right-angle subduction of the Kula Plate.

Notes: Abstract Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a diet containing 1.2% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) for 1–7 days, and blood coagulation factors II, VII, VIII, IX and X, and platelet aggregation were measured. The plasma concentrations of factors II, VII, IX and X were significantly reduced in a time-dependent fashion when BHT was administered for 2–7 days and haemorrhages in epididymis were found in rats given BHT for 4–7 days. On the contrary, thrombin-induced and calcium-required aggregation of washed platelets was unchanged throughout the experiment. These results suggest that factors II, VII, IX and X rapidly decrease immediately after the administration of BHT, but hypoaggregability of washed platelets reported previously may be a secondary defect caused by bleeding.

Notes: Abstract Male Sprague-Dawley rats and male ICR mice, species respectively susceptible and resistant to the haemorrhagic effect of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), were administered BHT quinone methide (2,6-di-tert-butyl4-methylene-2,5-cyclohexadienone) orally; 24 or 48 h later the plasma concentrations of blood coagulation factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX and X were determined. BHT quinone methide caused a decrease in factors II, VII, IX and X in a dose-dependent manner after 48 h, while a similar dose of BHT did not. Haemorrhages in epididymis or thymus were found in BHT quinone methide-treated rats. These findings may support the belief that BHT quinone methide is an active metabolite which disturbs the vitamin K redox cycle in BHT-induced haemorrhage.

Notes: Polymers having stable pendant . radicals were synthesized through their precursor polymers by oxidizing them in air or by H2O2-Na2WO4. Hydrochlorides and sulfates of 4-methacryloylamino- and 4-methacryloyloxy-1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidines were synthesized as precursor monomers and polymerized by using α,α′-azobisisobutyronitrile under appropriate conditions to precursor polymers of high molecular weight: poly-4-methacryloylamino-/oxy-1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinehydrochlorides and sulfates. The precursor polymers were converted to polymers having nitroxyl stable radicals, i.e., poly-4-methacryloylamino-/oxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyls, by oxidation in air or with H2O2-Na2WO4 without any main-chain scission. The structure of the resultant stable radical polymers was determined by infrared, ultraviolet, and ESR spectroscopy. Based on the results of spectroscopic analysis and Kjeldahl analysis, the transformation from precursors to nitroxyl stable radical polymers was found to be quantitative. Investigations on the applicability of polymeric nitroxyl radicals to oxidation-reduction reactions were attempted by means of polarography; the reduction half-wave potential was found to be -1.16 V for the mercury pool.
