Notes: Summary The relationship of the vascular changes to the cerebral lesions has been studied using serial sections of the brains from five cases of the strokeprone spontaneously hypertensive rats. Infraction was observed in a form of microinfarct related to single or plural occluded arterioles in the brain and subarachnoid space. Though most arterioles with fibrinoid necrosis of the wall were occluded with thrombus, infarct, which was obviously related to the occluded arterioles, was verified only in a few occasions. It was proved that infarction did not develop in all the areas irrigated by the occluded arterioles, and the regional circulation was assumed to have been maintained by the collateral circulation. There was rarefaction of the neuropil with preservation of the neurons in the cortex around the vascular changes, such as fibrinoid necrosis of the wall. Widespread rarefaction and cyst formation were observed in the subjacent white matter, which were more marked in the vicinity of the vascular changes in the cortex. These histological changes were interpreted to be the tissue degeneration secondary to edema.

Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic studies on cells and matrices of congenital pseudarthrosis of the femur of a 5.5-year-old male revealed three areas with different morphological features; a fibrous area, a cartilaginous area and an osseous area. Glycosaminoglycans were isolated from each of the three areas and characterized by the degradation with chondroitinases. Although chondroitin sulfate was the major component in all regions, a significant amount of dermatan sulfate occurred in the fibrous area. A small amount of hyaluronic acid was found in both fibrous and osseous areas. These results suggest that the peculiar composition of glycosaminoglycans in the affected part may account for some clinical aspects of the disease which resists treatment.

Notes: Summary Proteoglycans were extracted with 4 M guanidine HC1 solution containing protease inhibitors from various zones of human epiphyseal cartilages of the normally ossifying fibula and cartilaginous rudiment of the tibia of a 12-month-old boy with congenital absence of the tibia, when the knee disarticulation was performed. All the proteoglycan preparations from the epiphyseal cartilages were separated with a sucrose density gradient centrifugation into two components; a heavy, major component and a light one. The molecular size and the proportion of isomeric chondroitin sulfates of polysaccharides of the heavy component differed from those of the light one. The relative amounts of isomeric chondroitin sulfates in the polysaccharide moieties of the components also varied among these zones. The glycosaminoglycan content in the rudimentary tibia was equal to that of the epiphyseal cartilage of the fibula. However, proteoglycan preparations showed neither the normal sedimentation profile with two peaks nor the zonal differences as to the proportion of isomeric chondroitin sulfates. These results suggest that the alterations in proteoglycan metabolism might be involved in the pathogenetic mechanisms producing the congenital limb defect.

Notes: [Auszug] Twenty years after the discovery of sea-floor hot springs, vast stretches of the global mid-ocean-ridge system remain unexplored for hydrothermal venting. The southwest Indian ridge is a particularly intriguing region, as it is both the slowest-spreading of the main ridges and the sole modern ...

Notes: The closing pathway of masticatory movement in the vicinity of the intercuspal position (ICP) is considered as a functional movement in reconstructing the occlusal guidance. The purpose of this study was to examine a correlation between elevator muscle activity and direction of the closing pathway in the vicinity of the ICP during mastication. Fifty subjects (18 male and 32 female subjects aged from 21 to 34 years) were selected randomly from the students of the Kanagawa Dental College. The measurements of jaw movement during mastication were recorded using a Sirognathograph instrument and surface electromyography (EMG) of the anterior temporalis and masseter muscles simultaneously. The muscle activity and the direction of the closing pathway were calculated on the working and non-working sides during unilateral chewing and analysed at the sections of ICP-2 mm and 2–4 mm in sagittal view. The direction of the closing pathway was expressed by the angle to a vertical reference axis. The direction of the closing pathway correlated significantly with the activity of the anterior temporalis muscles on the non-working side and the masseter muscles on the working side at ICP-2 mm. From the results of this study, it was suggested that the elevator muscle activity may be associated with the direction of the closing pathway during mastication.

Notes: SUMMARY  This study assessed the accuracy of an electronic hinge axis tracing device (Cadiax compact®) in measuring the horizontal condylar inclination (HCI) and the Bennett angle. The hinge axis movements were simulated with an articulator to which the hinge axis tracer was attached. On the articulator the pre-set HCI values were 20°, 40° and 60°, the pre-set Bennett angles were 0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°. The maximum measuring errors ranged from 0 to 3·4° (in average 1·2°) and yielded statistically significant differences between articulator setting and Cadiax compact measurement (P 〈 0·05) except the HCI of 40° and the Bennett angle of 0°. Because of the small range of the maximum measuring error the Cadiax compact represented reasonable accuracy for clinical application in anterior guidance restorations.

Notes: A Japanese case of pemphigoid vegetans is described. The clinical, histopathological and immunological features were similar to the previously reported cases. The patient also developed vesicular lesions. Indirect immunoelectronmicroscopy revealed that the autoantibody in this patient's serum reacted with basal cell hemidesmosomes. This study provides further evidence that pemphigoid vegetans is a subtype of bullous pemphigoid.
