Notes: A new phenomenon, the frequency upshift in a pulsed free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier is reported. The measurement is made in an FEL that uses a mildly relativistic electron beam (750 keV, 90 A, 30 nsec) and is driven by a copropagating electromagnetic wave generated by a 33.39 GHz magnetron source. The frequency upshift is ascribed to the rapid temporal change in the effective dielectric coefficient that can be associated with the FEL interaction.

Notes: Single leaves of 3-month-old Cedrella odorata seedlings were exposed to a step reduction in the ambient dew point. The resultant time series of dynamic variations in leaf surface water vapour concentration, leaf surface water vapour concentration gradient, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance to water vapour, are analysed using the data-based mechanistic (DBM) modelling methodology of Young (e.g. Young & Lees 1992; Minchin et al. 1996 ). It is shown that the identified second-order, dynamic model between transpiration rate (as the input) and stomatal conductance (as the output) provides an appropriate, physiologically meaningful, description of the system. In particular, the dynamic relationship between these two variables is remarkably linear and can be resolved in terms of two parallel, first-order, subsystems; a model which complements the results of Cowan (1977) for cotton. The model is also compared with the recently published simulation model of Haefner, Buckley & Mott (1997).

Notes: The environmental quality objective and standards (EQO/EQS) approach to controlling and assessing estuarine pollution is described together with details of the information necessary to assess the health of the fish populations and determine whether the EQO/EQS are being met in an estuary. These concepts are illustrated by examples from the Forth estuary, Scotland, involving studies of the ecology, pathology, biochemistry and contaminant bioaccumulation of fish in relation to the benthos, water quality and anthropogenic influences.

Notes: Abstract Technegas and Pertechnegas are radioactive aerosols produced in a commercial generator and used for lung scintigraphy. The aerosols are produced by first evaporating to dryness standard technetium-99m generator eluate (99m-TcO4 in normal saline) in a graphite crucible (thesimmer stage) and then heating this to 2500° C (the „burn” stage). The aim of this work was to measure the particle size distributions of these agents and relate this to regional lung deposition. Factors that may vary during production of the aerosol in routine use were investigated to determine whether they influenced the particle size. Activity size distributions were measured using a serial wire-screen diffusion battery. The Technegas size distribution was approximately log-normal with an activity median diameter of 158 nm and a geometric standard deviation of 1.5. The results for Pertechnegas were similar. The median size increased with the number of simmers and with the time from generation. The increase in size with the number of simmers is thought to be due to the increased salt content in the crucible prior to the „burn”. The predicted lung deposition is 37% in the alveolar region and 5% in the bronchial region. Significant changes in deposition are not predicted over the range of particle sizes measured.

Notes: Abstract A technique is described for rapid and reproducible analysis of split-drop micropuncture sequences recorded on film. Automatic identification of the droplet menisci in each cine frame, and subsequent evaluation is performed by a computerised T.V. image analysis system. In comparison with a more conventional technique, the improvement in reproducibility of the analysis is achieved without loss of accuracy and is accompanied by a three fold increase in speed.

Notes: Abstract The trace element status of 25 children receiving a low phenylalanine diet for a treatment of phenylketonuria was studied using hair and serum samples. Hair trace element and calcium concentrations were assayed using X-ray microanalysis and compared with samples from sibling controls. Plasma, zinc and copper levels were compared with unselected hospital attenders. PKU patients were found to have significantly lower hair zinc (P〈0.001) and calcium (P〈0.01) concentrations and significantly higher hair copper (P〈0.001) concentrations compared with controls. Plasma zinc levels were below the lower limit of normal (9.6µmol l−1) in 8 of 19 patients (42%) in whom it was measured. The relative zinc deficiency in PKU patients may result from a competitive inhibition of absorption by copper or other metals supplemented in the diet.

Notes: Abstract The fish community of the Forth estuary, Scotland, has several components — estuarine resident species, diadromus migratory species, marine and freshwater adventitious species, marine juvenile migrants using the area as a nursery, and adults of marine species with seasonal migrations. The population changes during the period 1981–1988 in six species representative of the last two categories are described here. The species are the juvenile gadoids, whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.) and cod, Gadus morhua L., juvenile flatfish, plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L. and common dab, Limanda limanda (L.), and the adult clupeids, sprat, Sprattus sprattus (L.) and herring, Clupea harengus L. The species' population changes are described in relation to aspects of wider significance such as commercial fishing for these species in North Sea areas. In particular, the underlying decline of the juvenile cod populations since 1981 in the Forth Estuary is discussed in relation to the recent reduction in commercial fishing quotas.
