Notes: Studies I and II of this series (Taylor, 1978; Taylor and Colbert,1978) were concerned with the empirical development of homogeneous families of insurance company jobs based on data from the Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ). The current study, Study III, involved studies of validity generalization within the job families which resulted from the previous research. In general, it was hypothesized and found that regression equations yielded statistically significant cross-validated multiple correlations within job families and that different predictors were found valid for different job families. Cross-validated multiple correlation coefficients appeared to be somewhat larger when validation samples were drawn from the same job family than for cases in which validation samples were drawn from different job families. Absolute errors of prediction were found to be greater for regression equations applied across job families than for regression equations applied within job families. Implications of the job analysis and validity generalization studies are discussed.

Notes: The purpose and background of a series of three studies dealing with validity generalization are discussed, an overview of the series is provided, and the initial study is described. In the initial study a total of 76 insurance company jobs was analyzed by 203 raters in an effort to assess the potential usefulness of the Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ) as a job analysis device to be employed in a more extensive, companywide research program. Examination of rate-rerate and interrater reliability suggested that rate-rerate reliability was quite good, while interrater reliability estimates were somewhat lower. Cluster analysis techniques were applied to the five Overall and 17 Component dimensions of the PAQ yielding six job families in both analyses. The job families were described in terms of the various PAQ dimensions and were judged to be organizationally meaningful. Although the job clustering results were generally acceptable, it was conjectured that job families formed on the basis of company specific dimensions might prove even more meaningful.

Notes: Study II of this series describes further research into the construction of meaningful job families based on Position Analysis Questionnaire data. Ratings on 325 jobs from 1,408 raters were collected using the PAQ. The data were subjected to a component analysis yielding 13 interpretable dimensions. Job ratings scored along those dimensions were clustered into 13 homogeneous job families. The 13 job families were deemed more organizationally meaningful than were the six job families identified in Study I. Component structure stability was examined as was the consistency with which jobs were classified into job families. Results were interpreted as sufficiently encouraging to proceed with analyses of validity generalization within the job families, which are described in Study III.

Notes: [Auszug] A concept is developed for the regulation of populations by density-dependent movement, rather than by overt competition alone. Fitness is seen as maximising the reproductive advantage of a balance between migratory and congregatory behaviours. Population density is shown to be spatially, as well ...
