Notes: Abstract The operative treatment of a posterior cruciate ligament rupture through a straight central approach in the hollow of the knee is decribed. Following evaluation of the different operative procedures used in our clinic during the years of 1977 through 1990, this is now the preferred technique. The results of the different procedures are summarized. Clinical follow-up examinations were carried out in 75 patients operated on between 1977 and 1990, after a mean postoperative follow-up period of 6 years. For each patient the clinical results were evaluated both subjectively and objectively using OAK-scores and the KT-1000 arthrometer. Out of 75 patients, 43 whose injury had occurred more than 5 years earlier were post-examined radiologically. Rupture of the posterior cruciate ligament is rare compared with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, and the outcome after operative treatment is very often unsatisfactory. Since Mayo Robson carried out the first open reconstruction of a posterior cruciate ligament rupture, countless methods for operative stabilization have been described. On the basis of our experience of various operating procedures used during the years 1977 through 1990, reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament through a dorsal access is now our procedure of choice.

Notes: Abstract Clinical experiences with the Shapiro Staplizer in orthopedics and traumatology are described. Between 1985 and 1989, the stapler gun was employed in our department in a total of 837 surgical interventions. On the whole, the results achieved were excellent. Only 3.7% of the patients on whom the stapler gun was used experienced problems in connection with the staples. Good indications, poorer indications, and contraindications for the use of the stapler are discussed. If the correct techniques are used, failures can be avoided. Power-stapling is an effective method, though not always an easy one, to solve fixation problems in metaphyseal bone. It is quick, precise, gives good primary stability, and is well tolerated.

Notes: The occurrence of banded spherulites in blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) with poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) is studied by means of optical-, scanning electron-, environmental scanning electron-, and atomic force-microscopy as well as smallangle X-ray scattering. The measurements reveal that lamellae are confined in fibrils that bend periodically from the center of spherulites in a radial direction. The fibrils show also a regular spacing in the lateral direction. Single bent lamellae can be observed by atomic force microscopy after permanganic etching. The enrichment of amorphous material near to the growth front of the spherulites can be directly observed by polarized light microscopy after temperature jump experiments. The excluded amorphous material on the surface of the growing spherulites has the shape of droplets. This might be the main reason for the initiation of the bending process because the result is a non-uniform stress distribution acting on the growing lamellae at the interface between spherulites and the surrounding melt. The amorphous material of the blends can be found in three areas as observed by small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and microscopical methods: (i) between the lamellae, (ii) excluded from the interlamellar region but within the spherulite, and (iii) for high contents of non-crystallizable material, it can be excluded from the spherulite. The banding periodicity of spherulites as a function of the crystallization temperature can be described in terms of two models, based either (i) on the inherent twisting of lamellae perpendicular to the axis of a screw dislocation or (ii) on the dependence of the diffusion of amorphous material away from the growth front of lamellae and the temperature dependence of the rate of crystallization. Both models fail at very low supercoolings near to temperatures where the banding disappears completely.
