Notes: Abstract. A K+ channel with a main conductance of 29 pS was recorded after the incorporation of coronary artery membrane vesicles into lipid bilayers. This channel was identified as an ATP-sensitive K+ channel (KATP) because its activity was diminished by the internal application of 50–250 μm ATP-Na2. Moreover, it was opened when 10–50 μm pinacidil was externally applied. Single-channel records revealed the existence of several (sub)conductance states. At 0 mV and with a 5/250 KCl gradient, the main conductance of the KATP channel was 29 pS. The other (sub)conductance states were less frequent and had discrete values of 12, 17 and 22 pS. Pinacidil stabilized the channel open state primarily in the 29 pS conductance level; whereas ATP inhibited all the conductance levels. In general, KATP channels were characterized by brief openings followed by long closings (open probability, P o ≈ 0.02); only occasionally (3 out of 12 experiments) did the KATP channels have a high open probability (P o ≥ 0.7). Channel activity could be increased or rescued by adding 2.5–10 mm UDP-TRIS and 0.5–2 mm MgCl2 to the internal side of the channel.

Notes: We aim to approach a trefoil symmetry involving (Z4×Z4;q)-graded parameters, multiplets of generators of integer spin 〈2 with naive dimensions in the interval [0,1]. The resulting full clover extension involves as particular subalgebras the minimal clover extensions previously obtained. We address the introduction of further scalar, dimensionless multiplets, and central charges. They could provide connections among external and internal symmetries, perhaps after some graded symmetry breaking. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A graded minimal Lie algebraic extension of the space–time symmetry is constructed involving only spin-1 multiplets as novel generators. The extension involves Z4×Z4 graded parameters and generators. It provides a bosonic analog to supersymmetry since the composition of three symmetric vector charges produces a space–time translation. There arise three noncommutative four-dimensional manifolds with pseudometric. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: Technological exploitation of biohydrometallurgy for industrial metal recovery starts with batch and lab scale researches aimes at defining the basic information on microbiological and physico-chemical conditions influencing the process. An Italian ore having MnO2 as the most relevant component (27%) was subjected to bioleaching under different conditions, both in batch and lab scale fermenters. The results show that microbial solubilization of MnO2 in batch cultures requires MnO2 to be reduced to Mn2+. The process is influenced by several factors, e.g. nature, amount of organic matter and specific granulometry of the mineral. Quite surprisingly, aerobic conditions are required for manganese solubilization which, on the contrary, accumulates in a reduced chemical form. In a lab scale fermenter, multifactorial analysis of both data and physico-chemical factors indicates that an almost general correlation is found between the extent of sucrose expenditure and pyrolusite solubilization when different concentrations of sucrose and MnO2 are applied.

Notes: Abstract Ca2+ (ICa) and K+ (IK) currents were recorded in single cultured cells from rat aorta using the whole cell clamp technique with patch electrodes. ICa was detected at−30 mV, and at 20 mV it reached a peak in about 10 ms and decayed with a t1/2=50 ms. The mean maximum slope conductance (GCa) was 30 μS/cm2. IK was detected at−10 mV and at 20 mV reached its maximum with a t1/2=12 ms. For IK, GK=200 μS/cm2. These channels can be activated during action potentials and play a role in the excitation and contraction of vascular smooth muscle cells.

Notes: Abstract Calcium-activated potassium (KCa) channels are highly modulated by a large spectrum of metabolites. Neurotransmitters, hormones, lipids, and nucleotides are capable of activating and/or inhibiting KCa channels. Studies from the last few years have shown that metabolites modulate the activity of KCa channels via: (1) a change in the affinity of the channel for Ca2+ (K1/2 is modified), (2) a parallel shift in the voltage axis of the acitvation curves, or (3) a change in the slope (effective valence) of the voltage dependence curve. The shift of the voltage dependence curve can be a direct consequence of the change in the affinity for Ca2+. Recently, the mechanistic steps involved in the modulation of KCa channels are being uncovered. Some interactions may be direct on KCa channels and others may be mediated via G-proteins, second messengers, or phosphorylation. The information given in this review highlights the possibility that KCa channels can be activated or inhibited by metabolites without a change in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of decomposition ofα-goethite were investigated, under vacuum conditions, in the temperature range 170–250° C. The experimental thermogravimetric traces were interpreted according to the shrinking core model for cylindrical particles. The Arrhenius plot of InK (kinetic constant) against 1/T yielded an activation energy of 119±9 kJ mol−1 at 210° C. The highest specific area,S BET=118.4±5.5 m2 g−1, of the reaction productα-hematite, was obtained by decompsition at 225° C. Information about the formation of micropores and their evolution with temperature was also obtained.

Notes: The relationships between the specific rate of nutrient consumption and biomass growth and between the specific rate of penicillin production and oxygen concentration in the broth are analyzed. The functional dependencies which have been obtained from the experimental data of industrial fermenters are used with the mass balances to develop a model of the behavior of semicontinuous operations. The proposed model allows one to study the influence of some operational parameters. The obtained results agree with the data of industrial processes.

Notes: The role of fundamental parameters in the conduction of penicillin semicontinuous fermentations is analyzed. Biomass concentration, penicillin production, and main nutrient consumption are particularly studied. Furthermore, the conduction of the operation is simulated with regard to conditions of constant specific rate of growth and of constant oxygen concentration in the broth. An intermediate condition is also considered.
