    Notes: Summary The efficacy of different regimens of therapy for parenchymal brain cysticercosis either with praziquantel (PZQ) or with albendazole (ALB) was compared in 114 patients. Four schemes of treatment were used: PZQ 50 mg/kg per day for 15 days, PZQ 50 mg/kg per day for 8 days, ALB 15 mg/kg per day for 30 days, and ALB 15 mg/kg per day for 8 days. Three months after therapy, it was apparent that both PZQ and ALB were effective, as shown by the disappearance of cystic lesions in computed tomographic scans. Thirty-three control patients followed for a mean of 11 months had no spontaneous remission of lesions. When comparing PZQ with ALB, the latter was found to be more effective than the former for both the full and the short course of treatment: 85% vs 60% and 85% vs 48% disappearence of lesions, respectively (P〈0.001). Comparison of the full vs the short course of PZQ showed that the short course had a further 12% reduction in durg effectiveness. In contrast, the length of ALB therapy could be shortened without lessening its efficacy. Based on these results, an 8-day course of ALB is recommended as treatment for parenchymal brain cysticercosis; a 15-day course of PZQ could be subsequently used in those patients who show only partial response to ALB.

    Notes: Abstract  This work studies the tail and eye co-ordinated movements evoked by the focal electrical stimulation of the tectum in goldfish. The aim of the study is to understand better those tectal sites and mechanisms that either remain functionally unaltered or are adaptively modified across vertebrates. Stimulation was applied in various tectal zones, and the characteristics of evoked tail and eye movements were examined as a function of the stimulation site over tectal surface and the stimulus parameters. Two types of response were electrically evoked: the former turned the body and the eyes contraversively towards the source of natural stimulus; the second produced initial ipsiversive turning of the body and eyes, followed by several tail beats. Evoking one or other response depended on both the site and parameters of stimulation, and responses were interpreted as orienting- and escape-like, respectively. Depending on the stimulation site, four different zones in the tectum were distinguished: in the medial zone the stimulus elicited eye and tail movements whose size increased with the distance to the rostral pole. The stimulation of the antero-medial zone evoked contraversive or ipsiversive eye saccades but tail movements were similar, irrespective of eye movements. Stimulation within the extreme antero-medial zone evoked convergent eye movements, and tail displacements turning the body either ipsiversively or contraversively. Stimulation of the posterior zone often evoked complex tail movements and pure horizontal eye saccades. Both orienting- and escape-like responses were also dependent on the stimulus parameters. The relationships between stimulus parameters and tail- and eye-orienting movement characteristics suggest that the velocity and duration might be encoded in different aspects of the tectal activity. Current strength also modified the number of tail beats that appeared during escape-like response. In conclusion, the present data suggest the involvement of the optic tectum not only in orienting but also in escape responses and that movements of eye and tail mediating such responses depend on the tectal active locus together with its level of activity.

    Notes: We report a case of subcutaneous infection caused by the dermatophyte Microsporum gypseum in an immunocompetent host. The patient acquired the infection in the knee through a traumatic inoculation of a splinter. To our knowledge this is the first case of subcutaneous infection caused by this fungus.

    Notes: Abstract  A screening programme was developed leading to the isolation of 75 strains of soil gram-negative bacteria which are able to produce polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHA) from sugar-cane derivatives. The evaluation of these strains was performed with regard to their efficiency in converting carbohydrates or propionic acid into PHA constituents. Several strains were able to use sucrose as well as glucose and fructose to grow and afterwards to accumulate poly-(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) with promising yields. Seven strains were found to have more than 80% of the theoretical value when converting carbohydrates into PHB and accumulated at least 50% of the cell dry weight as PHB. Ten strains incorporated 3-hydroxyvaleric acid units into the polymer from propionic acid of which 3 gave yields comparable to those of Alcaligenes eutrophus.

    Notes: Abstract The known compounds friedelin, maytensifolin B, ginkgetin, bilobetin, and amentoflavone as well as the new triterpene 3β-hydroxyfriedelan-16-one were isolated fromCelaenodendron mexicanum (Euphorbiaceae), an endemic tree of the Pacific Ocean coast of Mexico. The compounds' structures were established on the basis of spectral analysis. The biological effects of aqueous leachates, a CHCl3-MeOH extract and the isolated compounds of leaves and twigs were evaluated on the radicle growth of two plants,Amaranthus leucocarpus andEchinochloa crusgalli, and on the radial growth of three phytopathogenic fungi,Fusarium sp.,Helminthosporium sp., andAlternaria sp. The organic extracts of both leaves and twigs inhibitedAmaranthus and stimulatedEchinochloa radicle growth. On the contrary, friedelin and maytensifolin B stimulatedAmaranthus and inhibitedEchinochloa. The target fungi showed a different response to each treatment, from inhibition to stimulation.

    Notes: Abstract Solid state fermentation (SSF) represents a technological alternative for a great variety of cereals and legumes, orcombination of them, to improve their nutritional quality and to obtain edible products with palatable sensorial characteristics. The objective of this work was to find the best conditions of fermentation temperature and time to obtain tempeh from hardened chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) applying SSF. Response surface methodology(RSM) was applied over three response variables (phytic acid, in vitro protein digestibility and available lysine) to find best conditions of fermentation to carry out the process. A central composite experimental design with two factors [X1 = temperature (31–36 °C) and X2 = time (48–72 h)] in five levels (2 factorials,2 axial, I central) was used. Spores from Rhizopus stolonifer were suspended in distilled water (1 ×106 spores/mL) and used as starter. According to regression models, minimum and maximum levels of the response variables were 1.24–2.66 mg phytic acid/g ofsample DM, 77.6–83.5% in vitro protein digestibility and2.18–4.63 g available lysine/16 g N. The superposition ofcontour plots of each one of the response variables allowedresearchers to find, graphically, the best conditions for the SSF process: 35.8 °C for 42.7 h.
