    Notes: Neutral lipid accumulation is frequently observed in some Gram-negative prokaryotes like Acinetobacter sp. and most actinomycetes, including the pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis and antibiotic producing streptomycetes. We examined the formation  of  wax  ester-  and  triacylglycerol  (TAG)-bodies in Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Rhodococcus opacus using microscopic, immunological and biophysical methods. A general model for prokaryotic lipid-body formation is proposed, clearly differing from the current models for the formation of lipid inclusions in eukaryotes and of poly(hydroxyalkanoic acid) (PHA) inclusions in prokaryotes. Formation of lipid-bodies starts with the docking of wax ester synthase/acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase (WS/DGAT) to the cytoplasm membrane. Both, analyses of in vivo and in vitro lipid-body synthesis, demonstrated the formation of small lipid droplets (SLDs), which remain bound to the membrane-associated enzyme. SLDs conglomerated subsequently to membrane-bound lipid-prebodies which are then released into the cytoplasm. The formation of matured lipid-bodies in the cytoplasm occurred by means of coalescence of SLDs inside the lipid prebodies, which are surrounded by a half-unit membrane of phospholipids.

    Notes: Summary Whip spiders (Amblypygi) are arachnids with a specialized first pair of legs. These legs are unusually long (20–25 cm) and are not used for walking. Instead their lengthy tarsi (7–8 cm) are covered with thousands of sensory hairs (mechano- and chemoreceptors). The legs thus resemble antennae of insects. Each sensory hair is associated with 4–40 neurons whose axons are grouped together to form two large tarsal nerves. The nerves contain about 23 000 sensory axons. Whereas most of the axons measure only 0.1–0.2 μm in diameter, a few are exceptionally large (3–20 μm). These are giant fibres. Their large somata are located in specific segments of the tarsi. The branched dendrites of the giant neurons receive hundreds of chemical synapses, presumably from the sensory axons of the hair sensilla. Since stimulation of the tarsal tip elicits fast withdrawal reaction (⩾80 ms), it is likely that the giant fibres provide the pathway for the rapid conduction of nerve impulses to the motor centres of the C.N.S. The system is comparable to the giant fibre system of certain insects. In contrast, however, the giant interneurons and associated synapses of whip spiders are not located in the C.N.S., but lie some 20 cm removed in the periphery. Thus, some primary sensory information already becomes processed in the peripheral nervous system, before it reaches the C.N.S.

    Notes: Electron microscopic examination of thin sections and freeze fractures of Locusta spermatids revealed that the proacrosome docks to the nuclear membrane and glides around the nucleus during sperm development. Whereas nuclear pore complexes occur in groups distributed at random over the entire nucleus of the early spermatid, they are found only in a narrow ring closely surrounding the centriolar adjunct in later spermatids. The pores appear to be swept caudally in the nuclear envelope, perhaps by a process like capping; they are not merely excluded by structures adhering to the nucleus. The observations suggest that both proacrosome migration and the deployment of pores are facilitated by the inherent fluidity of the nuclear membranes.
