Notes: To characterize the genes for enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of polyamines (PAs), their expression profiles were investigated and the levels of PAs in Arabidopsis thaliana quantified. In the Arabidopsis genome, eight genes involved in PAs biosynthesis were identified and the expression profiles of these genes were analysed, not only under abiotic stress to determine whether they were stress-inducible, constitutive, or stress-repressible, but also in various organs to show their tissue specificity. AtADC2 and AtSPMS mRNAs, encoding arginine decarboxylase and spermine synthase, clearly increased in response to NaCl and dehydration and abscisic acid treatments. Stress-inducible accumulation of AtADC2 mRNA correlated with putrescine (Put) accumulation under NaCl and dehydration treatments. In a cold condition, AtSAMDC2 mRNA increased significantly. AtADC2 and AtSAMDC2 mRNA were expressed in sexual organs such as flowers, buds and immature siliques. PAs also accumulated in sexual organs. These results suggest that the transcripts of eight genes involved in PA biosynthesis show different profiles of expression not only in response to environmental stress but also during plant development.

Notes: Abstract Engraftment of normal or lesional human skin onto nude or SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency) mice has been used as an in vivo experimental model. However, this model has some limitations, such as shrinkage and loss of the grafted skin over time. To improve the experimental model, we have produced two new SCID-lineage mouse strains, BALB/cA-nude-scid ( nu/nu , scid/scid ) and BALB/cA-beige-scid ( bg/bg , scid/scid ) mice, by the method of cross intercross. Intraepidermal neoplastic lesions such as Bowen’s disease were grafted onto the back of the mice of these strains. The rate of reduction in the size of the grafts was lower on nude-scid and beige-scid mice than on SCID mice. Rates of survival of neoplastic cells in the grafts were higher in nude-scid mice than in SCID and beige-scid mice (SCID mice 38%, nude-scid mice 55%, beige-scid mice 38%). Neoplastic cells of Bowen’s disease grafted onto a beige-scid mouse proliferated and invaded the dermis during 233 days of observation, confirming the progression to invasive squamous cell carcinoma from carcinoma in situ. The present study revealed that nude-scid and beige-scide mice newly produced by us provide a very useful in vivo experimental model for the investigation of carcinogenesis and tumor progression in human skin.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption rates and capacities of polyethylene glycol (PEG) were investigated for five montmorillonite clays. The adsorption of PEG for all the montmorillonite clays was rapid, and equilibrium was attained within 30 min. The adsorption isotherms of PEG for all the montmorillonites conformed to the Freundlich equation. The adsorption heats were 7.3 and 11.6 kJ · mol−1(mw.:2000), and 8.7 and 14.2 kJ · mol−1(mw.:20000) for the montmorillonite and the bentonite II-Ca, respectively. Adsorption capacities for all the clay samples approached constants for the molecular weight of PEG over 2000, though they increased with the increase of molecular weight under 2000. The adsorption capacities were slightly influenced by a nearly neutral pH. The montmorillonite clays which had different interlayer cations showed quite different adsorption capacities. The bentonite II-Ca, the acid clay, and the activated clay showed large adsorption capacities that were 30–50 % of that of an activated carbon.

Notes: Abstract In human skin transplanted to the back of 3 strains of immuno-deficient mice the functin of the eccrine sweat glands of the human transplant was tested by topical intradermal application of pilocarine, adrenaline and atropine+pilocarpine. Sweat responses were observed in pre-selected fields of observation by means of video macroscope. The iodine strarch reaction served as an indicator for the appearance of seat sport and permitted the evaluation of areas wetted by sweat in the field of observation. Among 9 animals tested, the hybrids between the CB-17-scid mouse and the BALB/cA-nu mouse (BALB/cA-nu,scid) seemed to exhibit the most consistent seweating response to local pharmacological stimulation. According to histological examination, eccrine sweat glands were preserved in human skin trasplanted into the back skin of the BALB/cA-nu,scid mouse strain. the heterologous, human skin graft provides a novel model permitting, independent of the normal sweat gland innervation, the analysis of moecular receptors of sweat gland cells by which the actions of natural transmitters and pharmacological agents are transduced.
