Notes: The Schulz and Blaschke equation in the rearranged form of Hart was used for reasonably precise calculation of the intrinsic viscosity from a single measured specific viscosity for stereoregular polybutene-1 in Decalin and for a series of alkyl methacrylate polymers in good and poor solvents. A single value of N can be used for each system provided careful measurements are made at specific viscosities somewhat below 1.

Notes: An isotactic polybutene-1 was fractionated, and melting points of several fractions were determined. The fractions were studied by light-scattering and viscosity techniques. The parameters in the Mark-Houwink equation are [η] η 4.73 × 10-5Mw0.80 in heptane at 35°C., [η] = 1.50 × 10-4Mw0.69 in heptane at 60°C., and [η] = 9.49 × 10-5Mw0.73 in decalin at 115°C. The molecular weight range studied was 0.45 × 105 to 0.9 × 106.

Notes: Poly(n-docosyl methacrylate) was prepared by emulsion polymerization. Since the weight-average molecular weight of the unfractionated material appeared to be unusually large, light scattering measurements were made in three solvents and at several temperatures. No evidence of association in solution was found. Values of average molecular weight, dimensions, and second virial coefficients are reported.

Notes: The tetrabromo and tetrachloro derivatives of bisphenol A and of the condensation products of hexafluoroacetone and tetrafluorodichloroacetone with phenol were prepared. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies proved that the parent compounds contained four symmetrical halogen atoms. It could not however predict whether or not the halogens were in the 2,6 or the 3,5 positions. Infrared studies conclusively proved that the halogens were in the 2,6 position by analogy with known model compounds.

Description / Table of Contents: Drei Proben von Polyisobutylmethacrylat mit bohem Molekulargewicht, 9371,2), SW 63/0082 und SW 62/0298, Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, wurden verschiedene Zeiten hindurch bei konstanter Geschwindigkeit zentrifugiert.
Notes: Three high molecular weight samples of poly(isobutyl methacrylate(designated as 937, SW 63/0082, and SW 62/0298 were obtained from Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. Sample 937 has been fractionated and describedl,2) earlier. Initial investigations have shown that the solution viscosities were shear dependent. The three samples were subjected to centrifugation at constant velocity for various times. The intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight (M̄w) dropped slightly for sample 937, but dropped drastically for the other two samples. The number average molecular weight (M̄n) remained constant for each sample under these conditions. In this presentation we have also shown the necessity for taking measurements at low angles daring light scattering measurements in order to obtain the correct molecular weight (M̄w) for these high molecular weight species.
