Notizen: Ultrashort pulse lasers have proven to have superior advantages over conventional continuous wave and long pulse lasers for ablation of thin metal films. Though several investigations have been carried out to understand the phenomena of ultrashort pulse laser machining, the effect of the beam polarization on ablation of thin metal films has been seldom investigated. In this article, we report our recent observations on how the shape of the machined feature and also the damage threshold of the material varies according to the polarization of the ultrashort pulse laser beam. Based on this we have explained how the polarization of the beam controls the laser cutting rate, kerf width, edge quality, and ablation depth of the ablated feature. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Measurement of vibration is a vital factor that limits the precision and accuracy of machining of micro and macro components. In this paper, a novel technique for measurement of vibration is proposed using an acousto-optic modulator, which highlights an improved approach in measuring vibration in the subnanometre range. An experimental comparison was made with a laser Doppler vibrometer. This novel concept is proposed for application to a precision machine tool to measure the vibration on the machine bed induced during the machining process and by the external environment, which can be compensated for by in-process techniques. This novel measurement technique can also be applied for the precision measurement of the stage movement in ultra-precision machines to a subnanometre resolution.

Notizen: Abstract Forty national goals of engineering education for the coming decade were identified by 106 Indian experts in the first round of a government-sponsored Delphi in India. The participants were outstanding engineers and technologists in the country, drawn from public and private sector industries, R and D organizations, engineering education institutions, government departments and defence services. In the second round, the priorities of these goals for the basic (undergraduate) engineering programme were determined. The initial consensus on priorities which was generated in the second round was then increased by adopting Delphi procedures in subsequent rounds. The design, monitoring procedures, results and difficulties experienced by the authors are described and discussed. In spite of its limitations, it is felt that the Delphi technique is a useful tool for identifying engineering education goals and priorities and for generating convergence of group opinion on them.

Notizen: Abstract The onset of thermohaline convection in an anisotropic rotating porous layer of infinite horizontal extent is investigated. Numerical computations are made assuming horizontal isotropy in permeability. It is observed that (i) for certain parameters a bottom-heavy arrangement destabilises a rotating anisotropic porous layer, (ii) the lower the anisotropy parameter, the higher the range of bottom-heavy solute gradient for which there is destabilisation, (iii) increase in the anisotropy parameter stabilises the system, and (iv) for some values of the parameters rotation destabilises the system, though in general, it has a stabilising effect.
