    Notes: 1 Our aim was to study the role of nitric oxide (NO) and arachidonic acid pathways in the α1-adrenoceptor-mediated vasoconstriction in mesenteric resistance arteries from 3–4 and 22 to 23-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats. 2 The expression of NO synthase (NOS), cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms, soluble guanylate cyclase, superoxide dismutase and the NAD(P)H oxidase subunits p22phox and p47phox were determined. 3 The NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester, a non-selective NOS inhibitor, shifted to the left but indomethacin and NS 398, non-selective and selective COX-2 inhibitors, shifted to the right the concentration-response curve for the vasoconstriction by phenylephrine in both age groups. 4 Ageing up-regulated endothelial NOS and p22phox expression but did not modify COX, soluble guanylate cyclase, superoxide dismutase and p47phox expression. 5 These data suggest that the observed enhancement of eNOS protein expression could constitute a compensatory mechanism to counter-regulate a chronic loss of NO possibly through increased superoxide anion production from NAD(P)H oxidase induced by age.

    Notes: Summary The effects of a single administration (48 hours) and of chronic (14 days) treatment with tricyclic (desipramine, nortryptiline) and nontricyclic (mianserin, nomifensine) antidepressant drugs on responses of the isolated anococcygeus muscle to the α2-adrenoceptor agonist xylazine (inhibition of contraction to field stimulation at 1 Hz) and to the α1-adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine (contraction of the muscle) have been studied. Of the drugs used only desipramine and nortryptiline administered chronically reduced the responsiveness of the anococcygeus muscle to phenylephrine suggesting a desensitization of postsynaptic α1-adrenoceptors. Long-term but not acute administration of antidepressants resulted in significant decrease in sensitivity of presynaptic α2-adrenoceptors to xylazine. These results show that the adaptative changes of α-adrenoceptors in the rat anococcygeus muscle following long-term administration may depend on the efficiency to inhibit the neuronal uptake and the ability to antagonize α1-adrenoceptors.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Kinetik und Mechanismus der thermischen Dehydratisierung von Uranyl-trans-hexendioat-Monohydrat [UO2(C6H6O4) · H2O] und Uranylfumarat [UO2(C4H2O4) · H2O] wurden mittels isothermer und nicht-isothermer gravimetrischer Methoden untersucht. Die die experimentellen Werte am genauesten beschreibenden Geschwindigkeitsgleichungen wurden durch übliche Methoden und mit Hilfe eines Computerprogramms bestimmt, das einen nahezu quantitativen Vergleich aller Versuchsdatenreihen (α, t) mit jeder GeschwindigkeitsgleichungF(α) ermöglicht. Zur Auswertung der bei linearer Aufheizgeschwindigkeit erhaltenen experimentellen Daten wurde die Gleichung von Coats und Redfern unter der Annahme benutzt, daß die durch isotherme Methoden bestimmten Funktionen auch für nicht-isotherme Versuche gültig sind. Die durch dynamische TG erhaltenen kinetischen Parameter sind von der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit und der Teilchengröße abhängig.
    Abstract: Резюме С помощью изотермиче ских и неизотермичес ких гравиметрических ме тодов изучена кинетика и ме ханизм термической д егидратации моногидратов солей у ранила с фумаровой [UO2(C4H2O4) · H2O] и транс-гексендикарбо новой кислотой [UO2(С6Н6О4) · Н2O]. Уравнения скорости реакций, наиболее точно соотв етствующих экспериментальным д анным, были определен ы обычными методами и с помощью программы на ЭВМ, что п озволило провести по чти количественное срав нение каждого набора эксперимента льных значений (а, t) с ка ким-либо уравнением скорости реакцииF (α). Для экспериментал ьных данных, полученн ых при линейно-увеличивающ ихся темпе-ратурах, было использовано ур авнение Коутса и Рэдф ерна, но предполагая при этом, что полученные изотерми ческим методом функц иональные зависимости, справед ливы также и для неизотермическ их процессов. Кинетич еские параметры, установле нные на основе динамической ТГ, пока зали четко выраженну ю зависимость от скоро сти нагрева и раз-мера частиц.
    Notes: Abstract The kinetics and mechanism of the thermal dehydration of uranyltrans-hexenedioate monohydrate [UO2(C6H6O4) · H2O] and uranyl fumarate [UO2(C4H2O4) · H2O] have been studied by means of isothermal and non-isothermal gravimetric methods. The rate equations that provide the most accurate fit to the experimental data were determined by the usual procedures and with a computer program that allows almost quantitative comparison of each set of experimental (α, t) values with any rate equationF(α). For the experimental data obtained at linearly increasing temperatures the Coats and Redfern equation was used, but assuming that the functions estimated by means of the isothermal method are also valid for the non-isothermal runs. The kinetics parameters derived from the dynamic TG method show clear dependences on the heating rate and particle size, but they are related by the compensation law.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition of Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O and β-Zn(OH)Cl materials under several experimental conditions has been studied by thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray high-temperature powder diffraction techniques. Several reaction schemes are proposed to account for thermal decomposition reactions undergone by both zinc hydroxide chlorides.

    Notes: Abstract Powders of ternary Mn–Ni–Co oxide negative temperature coefficient thermistors were synthesized by a low-temperature alternative route. The procedure allowed straightforward preparation without the addition of any binder, of highly densified Mn–Ni–Co–O semiconducting ceramics as cubic single-phase spinels, at relatively moderate temperature (≈1000 °C). A tentative cation distribution for the Mn1.5Ni0.6Co0.9O4 spinel oxide has been proposed, and its variation with temperature has also been considered. The dilatometric and X-ray powder diffraction studies carried out for Mn1.5Ni0.6Co0.9O4 showed that sintering takes place in a single stage between 900 and 1000 °C, and yields highly densified ceramic with an apparant density larger than 96% of the calculated X-ray density. Scanning electron microscopy showed different microstructures for the Mn1.5Ni0.6Co0.9O4 spinel oxide, depending on sintering conditions. The value of the sensitivity index, β=3068 K, indicates a good technological thermistor performance for this material. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

    Notes: A computer method for the qualitative analysis of fluorescence spectra recorded with any analysing crystal and using any wavelength-dispersive x-ray spectrometer is described. Originally, the programs are designed for an Olivetti P 6066 computer without being on-line with the spectrometer. These programs may, of course, also be used with slight modifications with higher capacity and on-line computers, thus making the analysis easier and faster.
