Notes: Presents an innovative approach used by one company to integrate its ISO 9000-certified management system with a recognised TQM framework (the Baldrige model). The company concerned developed its ISO 9000 system to address all elements of the Baldrige criteria. Of particular note is its process improvement approach that prioritises improvement projects based on their expected impact on the company's Baldrige score. This approach supported by an online Lotus Notes system helps the company to manage over 200 projects, covering different business units, in a systematic, fact-based way. All projects (with the exception of some strategic projects) pass through this system and therefore this system provides one of the key methods with which the company continuously improves and moves closer to fully satisfying its stakeholders' needs. A detailed description of this process improvement approach is provided including a number of key measures reporting on the effectiveness of the system.

Notes: [Auszug] The asteroid Mathilde has suffered at least five giant impacts. Previous studies suggest that Mathilde's giant craters should be surrounded by blankets of ejecta that are kilometres deep, yet the craters show no evidence of filling by material excavated during later nearby impacts. Notes: Abstract The societal definition of crime is eroding. As a consequence of this secular process the focus of interest among criminologists and the agents of the criminal justice system is widening towards the whole of society. A new definition of crime is emerging, based on the difference between dangerous career criminals and spontaneous one time offenders. This difference is determined in terms of personality and character types based on criminological ideas about the typical hard core criminal. Cohort studies provide the data and information to construct this ideal type.

Notes: Abstract This paper contributes to the solution of several open problems with parallel programming tools and their integration with performance evaluation environments. First, we propose interactive compilation scenarios instead of the usual black-box-oriented use of compiler tools. In such scenarios, information gathered by the compiler and the compiler's reasoning are presented to the user in meaningful ways and on-demand. Second, a tight integration of compilation and performance analysis tools is advocated. M any of the existing, advanced instruments for gathering performance results are being used in the presented environment and their results are combined in integrated views with compiler information and data from other tools. Initial instruments that assist users in “data mining” this information are presented and the need for much stronger facilities is explained. The URSA Family provides two tools addressing these issues. URSA MINOR supports a group of users at a specific site, such as a research or development project. URSA MAJOR complements this tool by making available the gathered results to the user community at large via the World-wide Web. This paper presents objectives, functionality, experience, and next development steps of the URSA tool family. Two case studies are presented that illustrate the use of the tools for developing and studying parallel applications and for evaluating parallelizing compilers.

Description: Die enge Zusammenarbeit der vier Berliner Universitätsbibliotheken1 reicht weit zurück.
Description: As regards implementing new library technology, the Berlin University libraries have been working closely together for more than 20 years. It was the case for the implementation of the legacy system Aleph 500, the linking system SFX, the digital library MetaLib and the library portal Primo, and therefore it was a matter of course to continue the close cooperation during the implementation of the new cloud-based library system, too. The experience gained during the contract negotiations and the implementation project, and lessons learned are the focus of this report.
