    Notes: Abstract The radioactive barium nuclide140Ba (T 1/2=12.8 d) has been separated chemically from fission products of uranium. The scheme of the carrier-free separation is described. The isotope shift in the barium II resonance line 6p 2 P 1/2-6s 2 S 1/2,λ=4934 Å has been measured by means of a pressure scanned Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The resultΔv(140Ba-138Ba)=−39.3 (3.2)mK has been used together with the remeasured isotope shift values of138Ba,136Ba, and134Ba to calculate the change of the mean square radius of the nuclear charge distributionδ〈r 2〉. The results are compared with data for isotonic nuclides of neighbouring elements.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Neutronenaktivierungsanalyse kann zur Bestimmung von Spurenelementen in Luftstaubproben auch bei Sammelzeiten von nur wenigen Stunden vorteilhaft eingesetzt werden. Für die Sammeltechnik haben sich Cellulose-Papierfilter als besonders spurenarm erwiesen. Für die meisten Elemente sind die Abscheidegrade befriedigend. In einer Reaktor-Kurzzeitbestrahlung von ca. 1 min können die Elemente Se, V, Al, Mg, Br, Cl, In, Mn, in einer nachgeschalteten Langzeitbestrahlung von ca. 1 Tag die Elemente Na, K, Cu, As, W, La, Cd, Au, Sb, Sm, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn, Cr, Sc quantitativ analysiert werden. Im Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe und an der Autobahn Karlsruhe—Bruchsal wurden Luftstaubkonzentrationen für die Elemente Se, V, Br, Mn, Cu, As, Zn, Fe, Co ermittelt. Erhöhte Werte an der Autobahn wurden lediglich für Brom gefunden. Blei, mit Atomabsorption bestimmt, verhält sich analog wie Brom.
    Notes: Abstract Neutron activation analysis can be applied to the determination of trace elements in airborn dust samples with great advantage, even if the collection time is only a few hours. Cellulose paper filters for collection have proved to contain a particularly small amount of trace elements. Filter efficiencies are satisfactory for most elements. In a short-time irradiation of approximately 1 min in a reactor the elements Se, V, Al, Mg, Br, Cl, In, Mn can be analyzed quantitatively; in a subsequent long-time irradiation of approximately 1 day, Na, K, Cu, As, W, La, Cd, Au, Sb, Sm, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn, Cr, Sc can be analyzed quantitatively. Airborne dust concentrations for the elements Se, V, Br, Mn, Cu, As, Zn, Fe, Co were determined at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center and close to the motorway between Karlsruhe and Bruchsal. Increased values close to the motorway were encountered only for bromine. Lead as determined by atomic absorption behaves like bromine.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei Verbrennungsprozessen emittierte Feinststäube können in der Atmosphäre unterschiedlichste Umwandlungen erfahren. Dabei ist nicht auszuschließen, daß nur schwer filtrierbare, quasi gasförmige Aerosole entstehen, ein Umstand, dem bei Immissionsmessungen bisher wenig Beachtung geschenkt wurde. Daten darüber sind kaum verfügbar. Es wurde daher ein umfangreiches Immissionsmeßprogramm mit neuartiger Probenahmetechnik, die auch die nicht durch Feinstfilter abscheidbaren Species in der Luft erfaßt, begonnen. Wichtiges Ergebnis ist, daß toxische Schwermetalle tatsächlich nicht nur in einer durch Feinstfilter aus der Luft abscheidbaren Form vorliegen. Die Messungen liefern Hinweise, daß die Schadstoffkonzentrationen in der Luft wegen der nicht quantitativen Filtrierbarkeit höher sind als bisher angenommen.
    Notes: Summary Very fine dusts emitted during incineration processes may undergo different transformations in the atmosphere. It cannot be ruled out that quasi-gaseous aerosols are generated which are difficult to filter, a fact to which has been paid little attention until now in air pollution measurements. Relevant data are hardly available. Therefore, a comprehensive air pollution measurement program was started, relying on a novel sampling technique covering also those species in the air which are not removable by very fine filters. The most essential finding is that toxic heavy metals actually occcur not only in a form removable from the air through superfine filters. The measurements indicate that the pollutent concentrations in the air are higher than previously supposed because of the fact that they cannot be filtered quantitatively.
