Abstract The authors examine a problem of torsion and antiplanar deformation of an ideal elastoplastic solid with a crack. It is shown that displacements at the crack tip are continuous, whereas strains have a singularity. The finite element method was used to approximate the displacements, and a singular, triangular, finite element at the crack tip with a singularity in respect of the strains 1/√r is proposed.
