Description / Table of Contents: Summary   By using the World Wide Web (WWW) it has become easy to access information which is distributed over the entire Internet. However, due to the immense and rapidly growing supply of information it has become necessary to go beyond pure hypertext navigation, and to provide tools which are able to utilize this huge „database“ WWW in a goal-oriented and efficient way. Such tools, which are collectively called search engines, are surveyed in this paper. In addition, recent approaches for applying techniques for the specification and processing of queries, as known from databases, in the context of the Web are described. There is hope that such an exploitation will lead to a more efficient and more comfortable way of dealing with the apparent flood of information.

Notes: Purpose - This paper proposes solutions to problems related to the maintenance and update of already existing e-learning courseware. Design/methodology/approach - A structured approach in form of a reference model for the re-engineering of existing educational material is presented. In this context, concepts already established in the area of aspect-oriented programming are applied to deal with crosscutting concerns in e-learning material. Finally, a software product line approach is proposed for the creation of new courseware using re-engineered components. Findings - It turns out that some aspects of the methodology developed for aspect-oriented programming can also be used to restructure the existing e-learning material in such a way that maintenance is eased and redundancy is significantly reduced. In addition, software product lines for e-learning material provide a global framework for coordinating the re-engineering and reuse of components. Practical implications - The advantage of the proposed approach is that existing e-learning standards and systems do not have to be modified or adapted. Originality/value - Usually, courseware evolves during a longer period of time and its development does not start every time from zero. There is a high incentive for re-engineering of existing courseware, since it constitutes in many cases the competitive advantage of companies or universities. However, up to now, little attention is paid to the maintenance and the efficient update of e-learning material which is already there.

Notes: Abstract In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the integration of data base management systems (DBMSs) into the CAD environment. The motivation for this interest is discussed and several problems are identified that have to be solved in order to yield a genuine coupling of DBMSs and CAD systems. A solution to these problems is proposed in the form of a new architecture for a CAD-DBMS. Based on this, a preliminary implementation is outlined that follows a rapid prototype approach, and in wh ich an access as well as a transaction manager were realized for a software-based fileserver/workstation topology. Some directions for future work are described.

Notes: Abstract A new correctness criterion for schedules of update transactions is proposed, which captures users' intended changes to the database. This is motivated by the observation that traditional serializability may lead to anomalies by not taking into account semantics related to such intended changes. The alternate criterion —goal-correctness — is orthogonal to serializability, and is based on realizing goals associated with each transaction. The problems involved in goal-oriented concurrency control are first identified in a general framework. The analysis suggests that this approach is practical only for restricted transaction languages where goals can be inferred and manipulated efficiently. One such language is then considered, capturing a class of updates of practical interest. For this language, it is shown that goal-oriented concurrency control is tractable and compares favorably to serializability with respect to complexity: testing goal-correctness takes polynomial time, while testing serializability is NP-complete. The set of schedules which are correct with respect to the two criteria are incomparable. Thus, goal-correctness may allow increased concurrency. The results highlight the feasibility and advantages of goal-oriented concurrency control in restricted frameworks. The paper also discusses the dynamic aspects of goal-oriented concurrency control; in particular, an optimistic approach to the dynamic generation of goal-correct schedules is presented.
