Notizen: New experiments and Monte Carlo simulations of positron implantation in gold are presented which, when compared with earlier work on aluminum, clearly demonstrate that the material dependence of positron implantation profiles is not adequately described by the simple mass density scaling factor in the widely used expression for median implantation depths. There is excellent agreement between the experimental results and the simulations which use the Penn dielectric formalism to describe inelastic scattering.

Notizen: Abstract The variation in intensity of the solar X-ray resonance (1s 2 1 S 0 - 1s2p 1 P 1), intercombination (1s 2 1 S 0 - 1s2p 3 P 1), and forbidden (1s2 1 S 0 - 1s2s 3 P 1) lines of helium-like Ovii with 2800 MHz solar radio flux is presented for three solar rotations. A high correlation (r ≈ 0.80) exists between the intensities of all three X-ray lines and the 2800 MHz solar flux. The ratio of the forbidden to the intercombination line intensities is found to be essentially independent of long term solar activity. This ratio is used to determine upper limits on the coronal electron density and to make inferences concerning the change in density with solar activity.

Notizen: Abstract Normal incidence multilayer coated EUV/XUV optical systems provide a powerful technique for the study of the structure of the solar corona. Such systems permit the imaging of the full solar disk and corona with high angular resolution in narrow wavelength bands that are dominated by a single line or a line multiplet excited over a well defined range of temperatures. We have photometrically analysed, and derived temperature and density information from, images of polar plumes obtained with a multilayer Cassegrain telescope operating in the wavelength interval λ = 171 to 175 Å, which is dominated by FeIX and FeX emission. This observation was obtained in October 1987, and is the first high resolution observation of an astronomical object obtained with normal incidence multilayer optics techniques. We find that photometric data taken from this observation, applied to a simple, semi-empirical model of supersonic solar wind flow, are consistent with the idea that polar plumes are a source of the solar wind. However, we are not able to uniquely trace high speed streams to polar plumes. The temperatures that we observed are typically ∼ 1 500 000 K for both the plumes and the interplume regions, with the plume temperatures slightly higher than those of the surrounding atmosphere. Typical electron densities of the plume and interplume regions, respectively, are 5 × 109 cm−3 and 1 × 108 cm−3 at the limb of the Sun.

Notizen: The response of a p-i-n photodetector made from gallium arsenide to both steady-state and transient illumination has been modelled. Both an ensemble Monte-Carlo model and a drift-diffusion model were used, the latter with the choice of two different mobility models. The effects of high intensity steady-state illumination on the field and carrier distributions in the photodetector were calculated, and a comparative study of the models made. The transient response to pulsed illumination has also been calculated and the different results obtained from the models explained. The effect of high illumination on the response speed of the detector has been demonstrated. In addition, an expression for obtaining the photocurrent from the Monte-Carlo simulation, with much reduced statistical noise over the conventional estimate, has been derived and successfully tested. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
