    Notes: The prevalence of ethanol-induced flushing was investigated in three different Caucasian student populations, namely Irish, Belgian and English. Approximately 45% of all female subjects reported a flushing reaction, while 33%, 17% and 9%, respectively, of male students reported this reaction. There was a high familial incidence of flushing in all groups, suggesting that a specific gene defect might be involved. Our previous investigations had inferred normal ALDH2 in such affected individuals, but low activities of erythrocyte ALDH1.1 Since the principal role of this cytosolic enzyme may be in the metabolism of biogenic amines, serotonin levels in platelet-rich plasma and urinary adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine were assayed in affected individuals after an oral ethanol challenge. No consistent pattern was evident for any of these parameters in any of the subjects at the time intervals investigated. Genotyping for ADH31 and ADH32 showed a higher frequency for ADH31, 58%, than ADH32, 42%. This is comparable to the Caucasian controls and to our previously published data.

    Notes: The effect of acute IP ethanol injections on the extracellular aspartate, glutamate, taurine and GABA content of the basolateral amygdala microdialysate was investigated in relationship with total brain ethanol. Each acute intraperitoneal injection of ethanol, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 g/kg body weight, induced an immediate increase in microdialysate taurine; both 0.5 and 1.0 g/kg ethanol evoked an increase during the first 20 minutes following injection which returned to baseline value by 40 minutes, despite the fact that ethanol was detectable in the brain until 60 or 120 minutes, respectively. After either 2.0 or 3.0 g/kg ethanol there was an increase in taurine of gradual intensity which gradually declined to reach baseline values by 100 minutes. In contrast, the ethanol concentration for 2.0 g/kg remained elevated at the end of the 120 minutes; approximately 25 mg ethanol/mg protein. The stimulated release of taurine within the amygdala could participate in the regulation of ethanolinduced changes in osmolarity, since taurine is postulated to act as an osmoregulator in the brain. Taurine could also mediate or interact with ethanol-induced central nervous system effects, as it exerts a modulatory action on cell excitability and neurotransmitter processes.

    Notes: Summary. Dietary assessments and biochemical indices including plasma zinc and copper were determined in pregnant vegetarian and non-vegetarian Gujerati women in India at 28 weeks gestation, and the results were contrasted with those of a comparable group of Gujerati pregnant women living in Harrow. Even though the dietary intake of energy, protein and zinc was significantly lower in the Indian vegetarian Gujerati group when compared to the equivalent group in Harrow, the birthweights of the babies delivered at term were similar. The intake of zinc in the diet of the Gujerati Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian groups was only one quarter of the US recommended intake during pregnancy and was approximately one half in the Harrow Indian groups. Even so, the plasma concentrations of zinc were similar in all dietary groups in either India or Harrow. The albumin content in the plasma of both the Gujerati Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian was significantly reduced when compared to the equivalent Harrow dietary groups. The plasma concentrations of both calcium and sodium were significantly correlated with the albumin concentration but not with the plasma content of zinc. Copper levels were elevated to the normal range in both dietary groups of the Gujerati and were similar to the concentrations found in the Harrow groups.
