Notes: [Auszug] Using apparatus in which air temperature and rate of flow could be held constant, the variation of the air saturation deficiency (in the absence of radiant heat) produced considerable fluctuations in the internal body-temperatures of lepidopterous and hymen-opterous larvae. In the case of ...

Notes: [Auszug] For some time now three members of this group have been the subject of extensive breeding experiments at Queen s College, Dundee, and a full account of the life-histories from egg to adult is now available. Much that is interesting has resulted from this work and some of the facts readily explain ...

Notes: Abstract The distribution and biology of Tribolium castaneum Herbst on temperature gradients varying in steepness was studied. It was found that the distribution of adults, eggs and pupae differed markedly on a shallow (0.08° C per cm) and steep (0.23° C per cm) gradient. However, this was not the case for the egg to adult developmental period, survival and eclosion pattern of adults. Clearly, some difference between adult distributions, or egg distributions, in gradient environments does not necessarily result in a noteworthy difference in biology though this possibility is not precluded.

Notes: Abstract The effect of desiccation on the light reactions of Carpophilus dimidiatus and Tribolium castaneum was studied. The results indicated that in C. dimidiatus the light reactions of normal adults of either sex were unaffected by humidity conditions. After desiccation, light responses were found to vary according to humidity conditions and also with respect to the sex of adults examined. In T. castaneum normal adults showed different light reactions according to the humidity test conditions. However at one condition only, i.e. ‘high’ humidity, the sexes responded differently. After desiccation light responses were still found to vary according to humidity but in both ‘high’ and ‘low’ humidities the response varied according to sex.

Notes: [Auszug] The newly formed prepupae, although lethargic, exhibit positive phototaxis ; but within a period of two or three days they become more active and photo-negative. This negative phototaxis appears to direct them to the pupation site in soil, and at present there is no evidence that a gravity reaction ...
