Notes: The Deming management method, which encompasses the breadth of W. Edwards Deming's approach to quality management, has had significant impact on the practice and scholarship of quality management. In this paper we present a scholarly introspection and discussion on scientific research related to the Deming management method, the contributions of such research to theory development in quality management, and future research directions to pursue in order to continue to advance scientific knowledge in quality management. In doing so, we traced the historical development of the Deming management method. We present and discuss two streams of research related to the Deming management method, namely the concept of profound knowledge and the Deming-based theory of TQM. We also highlight several opportunities for future research that would advance theory development in the TQM discipline - opportunities anchored by the imperative for confirmatory research that requires proper operationalization and primary data, and the plausibility of theory refinement and extension through the specification of new relationships and the inclusion of moderators and mediators.

Notes: Abstract  – A case of combined endodontic–periodontic lesions on a mandibular first molar was treated by intentional replantation and application of hydroxyapatites. Four months after the surgery, a porcelain-mental full crown restoration was completed. The 15-month follow-up examination showed that the tooth was clinically and radiographically healthy and functioned well.

Notes: Laser-induced dark traces in doped LiNbO3 crystals are studied with the 1064 nm fundamental radiation and the 532 nm second harmonic radiation of the Nd:YAG laser operating in a pulse mode. The results show that the dark traces are induced only by the 532 nm radiation. The linear relationship between the transmission loss and the 532 nm power density indicates that dark traces are not due to two-photon absorption. The recovery rates of the absorption in LiNbO3 with different wavelength probe laser are measured and show that laser-induced dark traces accompany more than one defect appearing in LiNbO3, and disappear quicker at higher temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Recently, it has been shown that when a semiconductor laser is directly modulated at high frequencies, the modulation signals suffer substantial loss and phase shift propagating from the wire feed point along the length of the laser. It was suggested that these distributed microwave effects lead to a further bandwidth degradation in electrical current injection over the single-pole roll-off predicted by a lumped RC model. We show, however, that this degradation is significant only when the laser is driven directly by a voltage source. In contrast, when the laser is driven, commonly, through a 50 Ω transmission line the degradation is minimal, and the total injection current is still RC limited. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Resonant modulation of a single contact semiconductor laser at the cavity roundtrip frequency of 40 GHz is demonstrated. Efficient mode coupling is obtained with a single contact device by utilizing the high attenuation of the millimeter-wave modulation signal along the laser stripe. The properties and limitations of this technique are analyzed using a distributed circuit model of the laser. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aims to set systems thinking into the context of manufacturing systems management (MSM), which is defined as a functional domain that involves the necessary activities such as design, implementation, operations and monitoring, needed to regulate and optimise a manufacturing system as it progresses through its life cycle. Based on a number of key principles of systems theory, results from an extensive analysis of the relevant methodologies and techniques, and data gathered through industrial practice, a conceptual MSM framework is proposed. This framework specifies the key functional areas of MSM, outlines the contents and relationships within them, and then logically integrates these into a closed loop to provide the basis for the development of a set of consistent parameters and procedures. Its aim is to help achieve understanding of the problem domain, and to provide guidance for the development of effective mechanisms and tools for future MSM activities. A number of cases to illustrate its industrial application are also presented.

Notes: The title mononuclear complex, [Yb(C5H7O2)3(C12H8N2)(H2O)], is a most uncommon carboxylate complex of a rare earth metal. Each YbIII ion is eightfold coordinated, being bonded to five O atoms of three dimethylacrylate groups, both N atoms of a phenanthroline and one O atom of a water molecule, giving a distorted square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron.

Notes: Nanoparticle reinforced nickel matrix composite coating, n-Al2O3/Ni, was prepared bymanual brush-plating and auto brush-plating technologies. For the auto-coating, the surface wassmooth and made up of large quantity spheroid grain. The observed auto-coating’s structure wasdense. Compared with the auto-coating, the manual-coating’s surface was coarser, the grains thatform the surface were not spheroid but anomalistic and similar to cauliflower. The structure ofmanual-coating was sparser than the auto-coating’s. And the test found that the auto-coating’smicro-hardness improves 8% than the manual-coating’s. Results of the friction wear testing atelevated temperature showed that the wear resistance of auto-coating decreases while the temperaturegoes higher. It was concluded that during the process of auto-coating, with the help of computer, thespeed, pressure and flow brush liquid was stable. While during the manual process the parameterswere not controlled so that the quality of the coating was influenced. The other advantage of theauto-coating was set worker free from the front line, decrease harm to worker, provide comfortableworking condition, and keep the coating’s quality on a high level, can be adapted to large-scalepopularization and application

Notes: It is common knowledge today that application of sound manufacturing concepts and techniques will only provide cost-effective, long-term return when manufacturing functions are totally integrated with the operators, maintenance engineers and other associated personnel. This paper presents a human-centred methodology and its associated knowledge-based tool, to utilize equipment failure information for the purpose of machine down-time minimization. Based upon a structured and rigorous assessment of each breakdown, and combined with total employee participation, continuous improvement of maintenance function and operational effectiveness of equipment can be made a reality.
