Description / Table of Contents:
After dissolving in the N2O4/DMF system, cellulose was transformed to sulfate half-esters by reaction with SO2, SO3 · DMF and NOSO4H, resp., and investigated with regard to substituent distribution within the anhydroglucose units by 13C-NMR-spectroscopy. After dissolution in N2O4/DMF all C-6 positions and part of C-2/C-3 are substituted by nitrite ester groups. After sulfatation and subsequent elimination of nitrite ester groups the distribution of sulfate half-ester groups depends largely on the water content in the system. Sulfatation by SO2 or NOSO4H with exclusion of water leads to C-6 substitution only. Employing SO3 · DMF as the acylating agent, addition of water to the system induces a shift of substituent distribution in favour of C-2/C-3. The results are discussed with respect to a possible mechanism of reaction.
Notes:
